hOOD Rivits?

Here comes a newby question! Some 427 Cobra's have rivits showing through the hood in the front, even some of the nicest ones?? I used to work for a guy building cobras and never seen this before?? Most of the cars coming from third world counties have these rivits showing...how come??
Thanks in advance,Newby!;)

The rivets are a relic from the competition cars. Beginning with the Le Mans model cars manufactured for competition by AC in '64 the aluminum adjacent to the body support tube at the front of the hood was rivited to the tube. The competition cars showed evidence of strain in this area as air buffeting from under the car pushed against the closed hood. The aluminum was pulling away from the supporting tube. The rivets reinforce the join.

Several of todays replics repeat the rivet pattern, including cars that are manufactured in fiberglass and have no need for reinforcement. The 'rivits' on my Superformance are purely cosmetic and a buyer has the option to delete them from the completed body.

Because that is the way the ORIGINAL aluminum bodied Cobras came.

Now just ask about the spacing.....I dare ya'.:D

As the story goes, early Cobra racers experienced aspiration problems. Someone went to a local speed shop and bought an aftermarket fiberglass hood scoop to help force air through the engine. It was fastened using pop rivets. Problem solved. Replica manufacturers mold the scoop into the hood in production. More authentic to have pop rivets and there is a proper spacing although I can't remember the exact numbers.

The same was true for the rivets around the front of the hood. During racing, the high airflow across the hood skin caused the skin and 1 inch tube frame to separate. Pop rivets solved this problem too. To be more authentic, some owners pop rivet their hoods and scoop to make the car look like an original CSX. The pinnacle of fake snakes.

Looks like a bunch of us jumped on this one. I saved a copy of the hood rivet spacing somewhere, but can't find it. Probably put it in that 'safe, easy to remember place'! Since they were done after production by individual owners, I really don't think there was a specific spacing pattern. Find some good detail pictures of original cars and make your own pattern.

I did not do the scoop but on the hood I used 6/32 stainless button head machine screws. I drilled and tapped the hood and gently screwed them in with a little loctite. I think they are better than rivits as they do not crush the glass.

I used the same diagram as Roscoe for my rivets. I took stainless rivets polished them and then removed the shanks. I drilled 1/8 inch holes and used black RTV as an adhesive on the rivets. This worked well becuase it was easy clean up and they can be removed if needed. I decided to do the scoop even though it is molded into the hood.
