Voltage too high?

I have a Powermaster 60 amp one wire alternator and the volt gauge reads 16 volts. When I turn the fan on it drops to 15. Is this too much? I don't want to blow the battery. I drove around yesterday (temp in Georgia 75) for over an hour and everything was fine. Am I worrying for nothing?

Meter

Hi,
I would buy/borrow a real digital meter and measure the voltage. The gauges are notorious for being wrong. I run the same PM alt, it is set at 14.4 volts. One volt up or down will be ok, higher voltages may overcharge the battery ,boil it.

The alternator is internally regulated. The battery will tell the internal regulator what it needs. 16 seems pretty high. Is it a 12 volt alternator? Are you sure it's a 12 volt battery? (some are not) You might put a voltage meter on the battery to see what you are actually getting back there.

I beleive you . My volt gauge started out not showing anything .Then I compared it to new gauges at the dealer .Mine regestered more than they did. Battery charger went a little nuts and my voltgauge started working. Shows 14V untill I turn fans or lites on.
