JAG XKE Diff Side brackets needed
Gentlemen;Once again I am on the Hunt for parts, namely a pair of Early 1963-69 XKE Rear diff Side brackets. The ones I am looking for are the 6 Degree ones. They were made 0 Degree,3 Degree, and the 6 Degree. The brackets that I seek are the ones that mount the lower control arms via a Fulcrum shaft - to the Differential itself. Those Tapered bolts hold it to the diff case. Can anyone help me??
Also - Still wanted: Contemporary Body...Take Care All!!:) |
Mike,
6 degrees is quite unusual. Are you sure? I went through the same issue during my build since my upper support plate angle was incorrect and the holes in the frame cross member wouldn't line up. It all comes down to pinnion angle. The engine and transmission will set in almost horizontal, i.e. 0 degrees. The zero degree brackets will align the pinnion perfectly. A six degree set will cause severe u-joint problems if your engine is horizontal. I cut off the upper support plate and fabricated a new one using the differntial mounted to the cross member as a guide. If I have mistaken your intent, please disregard. Dave |
Contemp Frame
Dave; Thanks for answering so quick!,My problem is: I installed my 1979 XJ12 rear diff on the Contemporary Frame and sure enough the "Pivot" shafts for the rear Control arms will not feed into the holes in the frame ( with the 0 Degree brackets). The underside of the Differential up near the yoke is very close (3/8") to the bottom of the "Cut-out" Factory made in the frame crossmember. If I "Tilted" the Diff (Yoke - downward) with shims to be able to line up the Pivot shafts - the Diff would hit the frame. I Spoke with CWI and was informed that Contemporary Frames need the use of the 6 Degree side brackets to work.I can send them to CWI and there is a way to Specially weld them and get them Redrilled and Tapered to work with this chassis. How does your Diff not hit the frame if you are useing the 0 Degree side brackets?. What year Diff are you useing?. Thankyou for your input Sir...Mike

I got the redrilled ones from CWI (2.5 degrees in my case) and they worked just fine.

Mike, last time I looked FFR had Contemporary bodies for sale for $3950. Here's the link:

Mike,
If you're looking for stock or modified pieces for the Jag rear, why not try Classic Jaguar? I bought a reconditioned steering rack from them. Good business, fast and reliable. I know they have everything and know all about Jag rears. website: http://www.classicjaguar.com/ |
Mike,
I did a little trimming and re-boxing the rear cross member also. You really need the pinnion parallel with the engine/tranny. Put the engine, or a bare block, and tranny in the frame. Have the frame level and start figuring. You need to have them parrallel within a few degrees. Dave |
Contemporary Diff alignment
Gentlemen; Thankyou for all the advice...I see I am not alone because others experienced the same problem that I am now having.I agree that setting the Pinion angle to near zero (+1 to +3) is the most important.I will have to examine this again and figure out the best way of doing this....If it means to cut the mounting plate off and reweld, then so be it.
Please keep your "Peepers" open for a Contemporary Body that I am seeking,Yes I am aware that FFR makes the shell, but I need the whole thing: Body,Inner Tub,Doors,Hood+Trunk.Take care all...Mike.S |
I think some of the later Contemporary frames used zero degree on the side brackets. If the motor in your chassis can be made to sit at zero then you could cut and reweld the diff top mount (I think you might have problems getting the bell housing and headers to clear the body). Just be very sure you get them both the same. That said, I think you will probably end up having to use 6 degree brackets. I've ridden in some Contemps with bad vibrations thru the drive line due to misalignment. To clear some confusion all the Jag diff housings (xke/xj6/3.8s)top angles are the same for all years, just the side brackets changed

Look at the bottom mounts, the lowercontrol arms bolt to it, there is an angle in them to put a little anti-squat (0-3 or 6 degrees) in the lower control arms. Whether Contemporary desinged the uppermout with this in mind, or not, who knows?
