back from the dyno!!!
Well I went to the chassis dyno today [knew the car was not running up to what it should]Well very dishaeartin news.
First the stelling air cleaner [the only one that fits my set up] cost 41 hp!! And second I am running a full on MSD system billet dist 6al and hvc coil.Well the first run the motor was cutting out[could not feel it but you sure could see it in the graph] and it was the rev chip.So it was removed and made a world of difference BUT the hp graph looks more like a sine wave than a hp graph and we have come up with the ign being the problem. NOW the question I put to you guys is what ign do you run and how smooth is the hp graph.I am thinking of trying the jacobs pro street is that a ggod choice?I think it is in the module and not the dist.I feel atleast another 40 hp from fixing that problem.By the way the a/f was flat all the way across at 11.8.Stan |
I use an MSD 6AL with no problems on my 418 stroker. Yes, the Stellings air cleaner will do you motor no favors for HP. Get a K&N 2x9" air cleaner if you want something that is close to an original look but with a premium air filter element. The A/F ratio is too rich as far as I can see. Your ratio should dip to 11:1 or so when you nail it, but come back up to around 12.5:1 or 13:1 at high speed WOT. The MSD systems are extremely popular as an aftermarket system. I would replace the module before I installed a completely new system. Make sure everything is wired correctly.
My HP curve on the dyno is very linear and climbs picture perfect. On my motor design the torque is at its peak at 3000 rpm and stays relatively flat across to 6000 rpm where it drops off about 50 lbs. Good luck on your motor and dyno pulls. |
Your MSD system is fine, way better than the Jacobs.
It has a problem, did they buzz the box? Send it back to MSD for testing, they'll tell you if it's in the ignition box. |
If you drop one jet size front & rear that should put you in the 12's on AF and net you another 10-15rwhp. In our area we have seen 2 MSD 6AL boxes with exactly the same problem you have. The MSD 6AL with their matching Master Blaster coil is an excellent system. BUT there are 6AL boxes out there that cannot rev with a rev limiter chip installed. They break up bad somewhere in the 5's. Change the chip and same result. Take out the chip and the motor pulls straight to the top. Now is the time to contact MSD and send the box to them for repair or replacement. When they bench test it they may just swap it out for you as they must know of this problem. Local race shops can becnh test it but you already know the problem is in the box.
