Weber IDFs
Weber adjustments.
I have been reading in several books and forums and have not found the same answer twice. here it goes On your weber carbs what are your settings. How far are your idle speed screws turned in? 1/2, 1, 2? How far out are your idle mixture screws? 1/2, 3/4, 1, 8? Also can anybody tell me how to tell if my main circuit is lean? Is there a way to read the plugs for the main circuit or do they only tell you the overall conditions? Lastly, I removed the screw from the vacume advance port on one of my IDFs and a few drops of fuel came out. What would cause this, and is there something I should do or look for? Thank you |
Search CC on the IDF. We have had a considerable amount of discussion on these units at various times.
The jetting on a IDF is, essentially, the same for that found on an IDA. Again, do a search of CC, as you will find a ton of information on the IDA that would apply to your current situation. |
Every setup is different. You can't read the plugs they aren't reliable you need to get the car on a Dyno and tune it. Trust me. France is correct that the jetting is essentially the same but again every engine is different so your going to have to tweak it from the base setup that is recommended. As and example we have my car that runs 160 Mains and a friends that runs 195's...you just have to dyno tune them. Every car will have different turns...none will be the same.

How about this.
I feel that the butterflies should be almost closed if not closed at idle. That if they are not then you need to get a larget idle jet. I also believe that the idle jets should be turned out no more than 3/4 to 1 turn. Does anybody agree with this? Also does anybody run the cold start enrichment AKA chokes that came on the IDFs? Pros and Cons... Thank you all for your help |
There are very few people on the Forum that have had experience with IDFs, as most prefer the more original IDA. You are correct on the 3/4 to 1 turn theory.
Aggie is correct, in that you need to baseline everything and proceed accordingly. None of these systems work the same. I am not sure what you are referring to regarding a choke (enrichment) system on the IDF. I have never seen one and have owned a couple of units. |
My IDFs have a small lever on the opposite side of the mixture screws. Most people remove them but it is basically a mechanical choke for cold starts.

Can't say for the IDF specificaly, but Weber don't use a conventional butterfly choke for cold start, instead an enrichment circuit, not unlike a powervalve, activated with an extra air bleed circuit on most of their performance eom carbies. |

It was the best cold start system i've used. I had a DGV fitted to a crossflow 250 ci Ford ( daily driver ) and on our winter mornings, typically -6 c (20 F) it started and idled fine and with no flooding and eratic behavior. Just to clarify, Weber retained the butterfly style for their auto chokes on grocery getters.
For multiple set up, you may not need to use them, as you would pump enough fuel in from the accelerator pumps with just one squirt, though it may be useful as a fast idle 'till the engine warms up, as they don't flood like a conventional choke. |
