auburn
My auburn unit went out, only one wheel working. Any ideas on what to replace it with? Its a 9 inch center with 650 hp road race set up. Any thoughts? Thanks, Scott.

Scott'
Hal Copple recently changed his.Believe he has around 450hp. He road races, drags and cruises his, lots. "OK, here is the Torsen site, http://www.torsen.com/ If you want to read engineering papers about the technology and theory of this diff, you can go to Yahoo, search for Torsen, and get several nice papers describing the whole principle of the Torsen. It costs a little more than the other hi end diff's out there, around $500 or so. __________________ Hal Copple Stroked SPF "Daily Driver" IV Corps 71-72, Gulf War" |

Was it an Auburn Pro? I know there is a huge difference between the regular diff and the pro diff......Could be the upgrade you're looking for. I went with it in my rearend.

I read some of the information and it seems like the torson is the way to go for a road race application provided it does not break. I am running 650hp, slicks and I drive it pretty hard on the track. Anyone out there with a the same application and power that has had a torson stay together would be what I am looking for? Scott

Give Tom Barnard a call.
He's developed a new system for use in the Shelby spec racers with very good results. Phone (702) 651-0708 |
Free Auburn??
Scott,
Auburn was loosing market share big time with Torsen and Eaton coming out with affordable posi units. I noticed in the last adds for Auburn in the mags, they now offer free replacement units since they can't be rebuilt (like the other brands). Give them a call and see if you can work a deal, it can't hurt, all they can do is say no. |
I spoke with tex racing and a few others. Tex racing supplies nascar and says the tru trac is what I should go with, works well and won't break. Bob Bacon has been running one for several years in a road race cobra 427, 600+ hp, no problems, works great. Thanks for all the comments. Scott

Scott,
I don't like to hear about the parts you are breaking. I'm still running my original Tremec 3550 and a Jag Powerlock rear with 600+ hp. How much longer till I start breaking the drive train? And how about a Detroit Locker if your running a 9" rear? Lots of Mustang road racers run the Locker. RD |
The locker would work and not break but it tends to be more violent locking and unlocking. Tex racing recomended the non agressive tru trac because of the wheel base of the car and the power. I have driven a locker before, it works great but is a bit crude. You probably will not break the tremec but eventually, it will start hanging up on downshifts. In the syncro assembly, there are little rectangle detents, the ends chip off or crack and it causes a hang up on down shifts. It happend 3 times to me on two different tremecs. D&D has seen this occur in the 5 and 6 speed tranny's. Just drive it like a little old lady. Scott

Scott - With that little bitty motor you've got you will be just fine with a Torsen.
There is a difference though between the 8.8 and the 9 incher. The 9 incher runs a bit more bias than the 8.8 and also soaks up about 20 horsepower to drive it. It looks like the 8.8 version is the way to fly on a Cobra. We never could tear up the 9 incher back when we were testing that unit. Even tried a few drag passes in a alcohol rail that had 1250's on. It's still in a Thunderbolt, though my buddy says it is single tracking now he thinks. He plans on putting in a spool soon, so I'll see what if anything happened to that unit. We had some real pros go well out of their way to destroy that thing though. cobrashock |
