I have a coilover question.....
I need a compressed length of 10.25" and an extended length of 13.25".
Could I get enough height adjustment to obtain that with a 9.75"/14.625" shock? If I used a 10" spring with either one, I should get about the same ride height....if I compressed the spring to the same point....right? |
Anyone, anyone?
|
Bly,
Don't understand your question. ??? |
Basically Shell Valley recommends a shock with a compressed length of 10.25 and an extended length of 13.25.
So what would happen if I used a shock with a longer extended length, but used the same length spring? Would the car sit higher, or would the longer shock have enough adjustment to let the car sit at the same height as the shorter shock? |
Coil Overs
blykins,
Years ago I was looking for similar information. Check out this manufacturer's site for a wealth of information. They make Aldan Shocks and coilovers, among other things. I suggest this site for information only, and am not steering you toward their product line. www.magnumforceracing.com click on Aldan Eagle Coil Overs for some information. Go back to the prior page and click on Coil Over Shock Springs for additional information. David |
I just think I'm confused on how everything works....I understand with the first scenario (10.25/13.25) there's a 3" stroke. On the second scenario (9.75/14.625) there's almost a 5" stroke.
Having said that, the second shock is also approximately 1-3/8" longer at extended length. However, both specs recommend a 10" spring. So here's my question (I think): If both shocks had a 10" spring placed on them, and then both shocks were adjusted so that each spring was 9" long (for example).....then the second shock would still be an 1 and 3/8" longer than the first....right? So the car would sit (in this case the front) roughly an inch higher in the front with the longer shocks. Do I have this right so far? So given that the second shock is still over an inch longer, could the ride height still be manipulated so that the shocks are equal length? |
blykins: you need to know the distance between mounting points at ride height. when you know that then you can determine your shock requirements. go to speedwaymotors.com. they have a great shock chart in their coil over section. Example: ride height=10-3/4 to 11-3/4 needs a shock that will compress to9-1/2and extend to 12-3/4. if I did not help, sorry.

You're being very helpful. However, I have the requirements from SV on what shock lengths I need.....I was just trying to see what the difference is between different sizes.....if I could use a longer shock, and if so, what the visual differences would be.
|
blykins: if you look at speedway, i think you would find enough adjustability in the next longer shock. if you could use the 12 inch
spring you could use a softer shock maybe. the speedway chart helped me a lot. also, Dana at shell valley no doubt could answer your question. good luck. post what you decide. Byron w |
blykins,
The damper lenght that you are speaking of will be fine. So will the 10 inch springs. Ride height is not determined by the stroke lenght, it is determined by the compression of the spring. The coilovers will have enough threads to get your ride height correct. Just make sure that you are using the correct spring rate. |
Thanks
Thanks for the replies...
I knew you guys would have an answer as soon as I could get my thoughts out in actual words that could be understood. :) I was wanting to go with a little longer shock so that I could get a little squat in the rearend if I want.....but have adjustability to also get it down on the ground if I want.... Thanks for the help guys. |
Hey Byron.....I searched and never could find that chart you're speaking of.....could you post a link please?
|
If there is a possibility of binding, use some kind of a limiting strap so that your suspension doesn't drop past the original specs. In the front, you could break a ball joint. In the back, you may have driveshaft binding.

good morning blykins, post a fax number and i will fax the chart to you. i cant figure out how to post a link. not that computator smart, sorry

It's easy Byron....just pull up the website.....and when you're looking at the page that contains what you want, just highlight the address with your mouse in the address bar at the top of the browser. Then hold the control button in, and press C.
Next, just reply to this thread.....and when you start typing the message, just hold the control button in, and press V. That will copy and paste the link from your browser into a message box like this. :) |
blykins, the web site does not have the chart like the catalog does but here is the of two qa 1 shocks. if you have a fax i will fax the entire chart.
