Scary Noise, Please help.
Just got back from the final drive with the new buyer of my cobra, drive was very sedate nothing crazy. About 2 miles from my house after the new owner had left I get a strang noise comming from the tunnel, sounds like a loose bolt, some vibration through the stick shift.
Noise is a rattling sound, comes only when the car is at a stop or in neutral. Clutch in or out same sound but I think I get a little more noise with the clutch out. When moving there is no noise. I have no clue where to start looking at this point. A quick glace when I pulled the tunnel cover shows that everything is locked down tight. It sounds like a higher picth ring, my first through is a throwout bearing but thats just a throught. I have to get it fixed this weekend so any suggestion is warrented. It has to be ahead of the tranny because you can hear even if the rear drivetrain is not moving. Sound is getting worse at this point. Tranny has 2K miles on it from new and the clutch ~1500 or so. |
If you get a ringing sound at idle, and a vibration in the shifter, check the outer ring on your harmonic dampner. It might be blown and may be floating around behind your lower pully.

I would suggest you have a bad throwout bearing.

Can I get a T-10 throwout bearing at the local speed shops or am I going to have to order one.

If it's the same sound with the clutch in or out, it can't be the throwout bearing

A friend of mine had a simular noise, checked the tranny fluid, it was very low. He topped of the fluid, and the noise went away.
I hope your fix might be as easy, just a thought ! |
Thats a thought, I have not checked that in a while, and my cobra leaks quite a bit because of all of the coolers.
If you think about it, the transmission is moving around at idle less then in gear and as such the fluid might not be getting everywhere it needs to go. That would explain whay I am not getting the sound 100 of the time. Edited for clarity. |
Hmm..Is the noise only there when there is some kind of load? If something in the clutch were looseining I suppose it could be held quite when there was a load present. Just a random guess. if you have the tunnel off why don't you rig up a stethescope to track it down. A big screwdriver with the handle held to your eear and the blade touched to the car works in a pinch.

I just have not had time to do that yet, I dropped the car off and just went back to work. I called ahead and got a throwout bearing, a case of 80w/140 just to be safe. The car is shifting nomally, and it is running rine other then the sound so I just want to get it licked before I send it to its new owner.
If I can't I can always just float him a grand on the price so he can get it worked out by himself. I doubt it will come to that. I just wanted some quick digositcs before I went to the parts store on the way home so I would not get stuck on some strange tangent that my mind comes up with. |
Now it is only making the sound with the clutch out, but it is definitly in the box not in the clutch.
Put the car on a hill, pulled the speedo cable, ot nothing out of the box, was able to pull about a half mil of oil out the box it looks clean. now I just have to add some fluid see if it goes away I hope. |
