Cheapest way to upgrade to disc brakes on a 9" Ford.
I need somemore advice! :rolleyes: What is the cheapest way to update a 9" Ford rearend to disc brakes with parking brakes?
The guy that sold me the Shell Valley Cobra, says that he thinks the rearend came off of a 1978 Cougar. I do not know if it is a small bearing, a big old style bearing or a big new style bearing. It is kinda of confusing to me! :confused: Thanks in advance for any help! Killer |
My Shell Valley 9" rearend has the big old style bearing setup.
If you wander around www.wilwood.com, they have some diagrams of most all rearends. That should help you figure out which one you have. Sydney |

'This company has the inside track on Ford rear ends to help you identify it and they sell several brake kits. Some of the kits source brake parts from various Ford OEM applications. Some of the examples are sourced from Explorers, Mustangs, Taurus's.

Ford SVO has a rear disc set up for ford 8.8 and 9 " for just under 600.00,this seems to be easiest and most complete,try Shell Valley,they have these and other 9 inch rear options,Tim

Just be sure to replace master cylinder IF you're doing a drum to disk conversion.

Please give me the run down on your rear disc brake set-up if you don't mind,I'm going to put rear disc brakes on my 9" in my 65 Mustang Vintage Race car and have not decided which setup to use.......... I'm running 15" wheels and tires..... Need to know the year model of the Explorer and what exactly you need for the conversion and how well does this set-up work......BTW,I will NOT be using the emergency brakes and I do have pretty good access to several salvage yards that have some Explorers,I could probably get the set-up at a very reasonable price,I will use porterfeild race pads as they make them for just about any brake caliper made.......... I don't think I can be of much help. I do not know the exact year of the
brakes from the Explorer but I suspect somewhere in the early 90's. They are Explorer calipers. They had a parking brake inside but I don't use it. I ordered my chassis as a roller so the brakes were installed already. I can't say if I have a custom bracket or not. If Explorers have 9" rears then I suspect they would bolt right on. Check with your Ford dealers mechanic. There may be some pics on my build site http://www.priveye.com/cobra.htm You may try calling A&C up in Buffalo. Maybe they can tell you what they use. From what I gathered the brakes that will work on the 9" is 1996 or 1997 Explorer or Mountaineer brakes. Your 9" Ford has to be the Big Ford (New Style) rearend.
You can buy the kit from Ford Racing for around $400.00 plus shipping from Max at Five Star Ford. Or you can piece it together at your local parts store. I found everything other than hubs that hold the emergency brakes assembly for around $165.00 from O'Reilly's. If I find the hubs anywhere, I will send it to you. Keep in mind that whatever 9" axle assembly you choose will most likely have to be narrowed, at which time you can put whatever housing ends and bearings on it that you want. The best bearing set up is the Timkin tapered roller bearing, commonly called a set 20 I believe. How it got that name I am not sure. It will take much more thrust (To us that is sliding around turns) than a typical sealed ball type bearing.

I used Lincoln rear brakes and machined them to fit on 11" rotors.
It was much more work than what I wanted and if I had a second chance, I think I would be interested in letting someone else do the engineering. :D :3DSMILE: |
I have a 1967 mustang 9" that has been narrowed in my midstates. I used 1984 lincoln mark 7 rear disk set up. Got the whole set up from salvage yard. You will need the brackets from the lincoln rear axle.I exchanged the calipers at carquest for rebuilt ones and bought new roters. They have rear parking brakes on the calipers.
