Lead Hammers

Are all lead hammers essentially the same? Is Cobra Restorers the place to buy them? What weight do folks recommend for Trigo spinners (assuming anti-seize has been applied)? Also, is there a particular brand of anti-seize that is recommended for the hubs and spinners?

Thanks

You might call Lynn Park at Trico. He carries lead hammers for his(Trigo) wheels.-TS

Lew,
Are you using safety wire also?

Lew Ledyard 03-30-2005 08:03 AM

Yes. I am addicted to the stuff from my motorcycle daze.

If you've got spinners, get a spinner tool:

I know it's pricey, but it works and you'll need it eventually. Do a search on this subject and you'll find several horror stories about trying to get frozen spinners loose. Also, consider changing from the aluminum spinners to the stainless steel ones:

There are two opinions which have been expressed in these forums on the stuck-spinner problem. Some folks have never had a problem and will tell you that spending $185 on a spinner tool is a waste of money. Others (me included) have had them seize and fought the good fight to get them loose. If (or more likely, when) they do seize, you'll need one of the good doctor's tools to get them loose, and you'll start looking more seriously at the stainless spinners. Just hope it doesn't happen when you've got a flat tire 43 miles outside of East Camel's Breath, Nebraska. My 2 cents worth; YMMV.

I got my lead hammer at one of the car shows I attended. I have also seen them at hardware stores and also some of the tool shops. I think mine is a five pounder. The anti sieze I use I think is Permatex or something like that. I have the one in a jar that has a brush in it. Works great. Look at the post on the SCOF site, it tallks about the spinner tool.

I picked up a 4 lb Cook lead hammer at my local Fastenal tool supply house. I paid about $15. They have a variety of sizes, and are much cheaper than any of the Cobra suppliers. Check your local Yellow Pages for a Fastenal dealer and ask for a Cook brand 4-5 lb lead hammer.

Here are some Delaware Fastenal locations (I obviously had nothing else to do this afternoon!)
