I've got the 9'' Lincoln rear in my cobra, Have put a few miles on it now, Are we supposed to hear alot more out of the rearend, now that it's only a foot and a half away from my right elbow, I here almost a (backlash) noise when letting off the pedal at speeds of 55-80MPH , Kind of a harmonic vibration,.This rear end was rebuilt ,a traction lock added,350 gears, using friction modifyer with the gear lube too... With only 1/4'' of fiberglass between it and me, maybe I should hear all this!! Any Thoughts:

I have a Shell Valley and hear no rear end noise. I would jack the car up and check to be sure everthing is tight. Also while it is jacked up check and see how much the wheel will turn before the drive shaft moves. A whine in a rear end could be from improper set up during the rebuild.

If it's a clunk it's probably a bearing or improper backlash, if it's a howl it's probably the gears.

I've found that original Ford gears in good condition always seem quieter than aftermarket gears.

same here

I have ford Aod, same as your C-6 but with over drive. The noise you here are coming from the tranny not the rear end. If the kickdown rod or cable are not adjusted properly you will get very hard down shift (clunk) when letting off the gas. Mine is really bad when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. You may need alittle break-in time before you get it just right. Also you can change your trans. fluid to B&M's synthetic Trick Shift performance automatic transmission fluid. This stuff is great. I don't know for sure that this will help you problem, but this sounds like the same thing that I encounterd when I got my Cobra on the road.

Thanks for the input fellas! Couldn't stand the mistery any longer, and since bad weather was on it's way in for the next few days, I yanked the axels out and pulled the hogs head! It was a well timed event too, a lock bolt on the carier had backed itself out a 1/4 inch! If this had dropped out, it would have been byebye gears! The wear pattern in the teeth looked fairly centered, backlash seamed fine too.Took it up to the same guy that rebuilt my C6, said he'd tear it apart, check every thing out , Run me $60-$70. Get some copper washers,90/W and a new gasket, maybe I'll be back in buisness?! Oh yea, had a shock seal go bad on the left rear too....Shawn
