Rich, lean or Timing

Hi,

Under heavy acceleration my car kicks out enough black exhaust that tells me it is not tuned correctly. Is that a rich condition, a lean condition, timing or some combination?

Could it just be a 4 barrell adjustment?

I may also need some adjustment guidance.

Thanks

black smoke = rich condition,a lot of black smoke (like a diesel truck) very rich condition.................

Jams - if you have a Holley carb on that car, check / replace your power valve.. When they blow, the fuel mixture goes extremely rich like what you are describing.

If it's an older holley definetly check your power valves, although you will usually have more problems than just heavy acceleration. You might want to check your plugs and distributor too. If leaning out doesn't fix it, try a 6AL to enhance your spark. Doesn't sound like timing, unless you are idleing rough and running hot.

From what you guys have described it just sounds like a rich condition.

I do have a Holley- a #6450 jumps into my head but it could also just be my pick 4 numbers.

I have never tuned a carb before where should I begin. All I know is you have to turn the adjustment screws and see how she idles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
