Incompatable hose ends and fittings
I have been struggling with a leaking hose end/fitting connection for several months and am somewhat miffed at this point. The oil filter mount is mounted to the LH frame rail in a horizontal position and has black hard anodized -10 male nipples to which the straight hose ends attach. It is difficult to determine the exact area of the leakage, as it is hard to access without getting under the car . I have changed the piece of hose, chaneged the O rings on the ports that the nipples screw into, then eliminated the O rings and used aluminum crush washers to seal the nipples to the mount. Yesterday I was told that the hose ends I have (Auto Fit, from Earl's) are not compatable with the Prolite 350 Hose. There does seem to be some confusion on this point however, Earl's does indicate the hose ends as being compatable with the hose. I have good seals at all places other that at the location with the hard anodized nipples. I looked at the mating surface on the nipples and there is a small indention but no scribed circle on the surface that would indicate a good seal, and I have tightened them very well.
Anyone have a similar situation? I'm thinking I need to replace the hard anodized black fittings with something different??? Any Ideas???? Thanks Rick |
You could very well have non-matching fittings. Flared fittings can have two different tapers. Typical hydraulic JIC fittings have a 37 degree taper, where SAE fittings are 45 degree. AN, or ArmyNavy, fittings typically have both. The o ring fitting shouldn't leak with 3000psi on it, this is a typical hydraulic fitting. I would take the filter housing, hose assembly, and block adapter to a hydraulics shop and have them put a compatible system together for you. Just look for a Parker hose and fittings dealer. They will custom make the hose also, so you get exactly what you need.

Take a magic marker and mark around the male fitting......... Then screw the fittings together but just to the point that they are about to be tight...... then rotate the male fitting or the female fitting...... This should leave a line or scratch around the Male fitting and you'll see what needs to be done.... They have soft seals that you can stick over the male fitting and reseal the hose fitting so it doesn't leak..... Pegasus or Aircraft spruce or someone has them.... Just get the fittings screwed together close enough to leave a mark around the male fitting and you'll see Morris |
