427 Stroker question

Hi,

I am in the process of building a 427W stroker. I have both steel and aluminum flywheels and would like to know if anyone out there can make recommendations based on previous experience. I have to get the rotating assembly balanced soon, so I need input from all sides. I appreciate you guys more and more everyday, thanks for all the help.

As light as the Cobra is, and with 427 c.i. of displacement, an aluminum flywheel will feel right at home. I have a 418 stroker with an aluminum flywheel and the car runs and behaves perfectly. The car will easily get underway from a dead stop in 2nd gear without a shudder or cough. Compression braking from high rpm is great....kinda feels like the brakes have been applied when backing off the throttle on the twisties. Good throttle response at all rpm's too!

chris;
Both have pros/cons. 30lb iron stores energy and smooths the engine out, cluth will be less sensitive to stalling, less lurch when lugging engine, etc.
Alum rev faster, when you hit it, more Hp going to wheels and not building inertial energy as it spools up.
I put an alum in my stoker and like it. I like the way it jumps when you blimp it in neutral; but the neatest sound is when you shut down; the engine spins for about one piston compression stoke and this suddenly stops. Key off-whomp-silence; very cool!

I had a billet steel flywheel in my stock stroke Windsor and Bill put an aluminum wheel in my stroker. The rev speed is quite noticable. I would go aluminum.
