Who's got the best (loudest) horn?
Last thing I have to do... buy and mount a horn.
Want something loud and obnoxious :) What do you guys like? Back in the sixties I had a set of Maserati air horns on my Lotus Cortina. They were a triple-note, rapid-cycling horn - loud as hell - that often scared the livin' sh!t out of anyone who was "in my way". :D Wish I could find a set again but no luck yet. |
The horns Griot's Garage sells, Hella I think, are reported to be very loud. The horns that came stock on my SPF #1735 were surprisingly very loud. Don't know where they are sourced from, but they sound very much like what you would hear coming from a full sized Ford from the 60's.

Excellent question ! I have had about 6 different horns in my Cobra, and haven't been pleased with any of them really.
I had an old Volvo 240, and while it never seemed loud to me, people i work with woul,d say it had the most irratating horn they ever heard and it put shivers down their spine when i would blow it for them to open our gate. I kept it when i sold the car, and now use it, but i would still like something more like a Mack truck horn. |
The Hellas are great. Griots also sells a minature air horn with a built in compressor.

Mother of all horns
I have a Horn from a EMD locomotive on my Ram.It's like Moses and the Red Sea.

I used the Hellas, but I shopped around. Those go for an assortment of prices.

If you're setting behind them reving your engine and can't get their attention what would a horn do?
I sat behind a brown Altima through 5 light cycles .In the rain .We were planning on a left turn at a traffic light. The first car moved out and went at the end of the first cycle. The next three cycles this car in front of me didn't move off his spot ,I rapped my loud exhaust, Nothing in that car in front of me moved . I finnaly turned into the right lane and went around this lump and went straight accross the intersection. People like that should ride a buss . I would have been content with one car getting through each cycle. Same incident , A cop comes opposite direction (oncomming traffic) and stops beside me.I'm setting in the rain ,open white 427 SC Cobra replica, Loud sidepipes just 2 or 3 feet from me. I'm waving ,pointing at the car infront of me not moving ,causing traffic line to build behind us. I couldn't raise an eyebrow on that cop.If your stupid and just sitting that isn't a problem. Horns , why not rockets. |

Okay, I tried this Sunday. The Hellas sound okay at a light or just moving up a little, but on the freeway, they just make it over the pipes.
I think Mike makes a good point, if they can't relate to the rumble of your side pipes, what do you think thay are going to do with the horn. I tried air horns and they are loud, but; 1. take a moment to sound 2. need a compressor 3. need maintenace 4. the hoses seem to spring leaks and fall off 5. stop working after a very short time ( mine did ) I like the Cadilac idea, may try that. |
Just throttle the engine........Oh! wait, I see you have a small block, never mind...sorry.

"...Moses and the Red Sea." Now that's what I'm talkin' about! ;-)
Where am I going to mount that sucker? The Caddy idea sounds good... but the Griot's air horn is 139db! Hmmm... |
I always like the air horns that Porsche used on 911's. I don't know if they still do or if there is something similar but the Hellas do work nice. Do shop around on them, the price ranges quite a bit.

The Griot's air unit is self contained and doesn't require a seperate compresso. If anyone tries it let us know how they work. I've been looking at both the Hella and the Griot's Italian air.
