Distributor Contact Corresion
My engine has became difficult to start so I pulled my distributor cap off and noticed a green corrision on all my contact points. I am running MSD Billit Distributor, MSD 6AL Box, Vibration Proof Blaster Coil with 8mm Taylor Plug wires and Autolite 3924 plugs.
I scraped away most of the corrision and was wondering if anyone has ever used some dielectric silicone on these parts? It is almost like I am getting electrolocis (sp) from a poor ground. Have any of you noticed anything like this? If so what did you do about it? Clois |
Clois,
I had the same thing happen with my last cap last Sept...Green "stuff" on the terminals. Talked with MSD Tech while ordering a new cap & rotor. They said it was the result of condensation. The new MSD cap ,P/N 8431,has a vent on top. |
I concur, the green nasties are a result of condensation within the the cap. My Mallory is well vented (from factory) and has no corrosion. But other units I've had/seen over the years have had it, and those units were not vented.
You can actually drill a small vent hole yourself. |
Someone awhile back said the MSD tech told him it was due to the high voltage and ionization inside the cap. I got it and while waiting for a replacement MSD cap I bought one off the shelf at the parts house for a 55-up Chevy and have had NO problems with the corrosion in 2+ years...plus, it looks better on my motor (black) and is cheaper.
