Wanted - heads for 289 in the coupe

Does anyone have a set of heads for a 289 that they would be interested in selling? I'd prefer a set of aftermarket cast iron heads, but stock heads that have been worked on or aluminum would be acceptable. I don't need the latest and greatest, just something for the street that I can install without a major rebuild of the motor.

Last weekend I decided to adjust the valves on the motor in the coupe and noticed that the rocker arms were not running true. After a little investigation, I saw that several of the rocker arm studs were not installed in alignment with the valve and pushrod centerlines. As a result of the misalignment, the rockers are being forced into a cocked position and are wearing the side of the stud. To top that off, when I took one of the rocker arm lock nuts off, the top 1/4" of one of the studs broke and came off with the locknut.

The heads were just stock 289 to which screw in studs were added along with a new set of stock size valves, so it isn't a major loss, but the machine shop that did the heads is now crossed out in my book.

Any leads on a set of heads would be appreciated.

Try this link for Ford GT40p rebuilt heads for a great price! This is how I was going to go before I purchased a set of early heads from a board member.

Chuck,

Don't be cheap at this point, buy a new set of Explorer cast iron heads as the low cost alternative.

There are many machining tolerances amoung various head and valve train manufactures. I strugled with the same thing, rockers not directly over the valve stem. Use the adjustable guide plates from Isky Cams, go to their website,I can't seem to get the link her, they solved my issue on my 289.

PS: I once purchased some rocker studs that when installed were not straight, the row of studs looked liked a bad picket fence. If you aren't using them I suggest ARP products.

Chuck I have a set of stock 289 heads I just pulled off my block, screw -in studs. Have the bolts also.
You want them say $50 plus shipping sound fair for the pair?

Tongue Pirate: I checked out the web site for the Explorer heads and they were out of stock at the present time with no ETA for a new set.

G.R: I need to step up a little more than just the stock heads, but thanks for the offer.

mloy: Other than the historical value, the hypo heads don't have any flow or valve size differences than the stock heads, so I think that I'm back to Explorer or aftermarket.

Thanks again for the responses on the heads. Guess I need to make a few phone calls.

Just another thought to keep in mind. If you have you headers and exhaust system fabricated already, keep in mind that the the exhaust port is moved upwards on some of the aftermarket heads. This could present a problem with the current placement of you exhaust pipes. Just a thought............

Out of stock! That sucks! I wonder if they have a backorder & what the wait is like?
