Tachometer Reading Low

My Smith's tach is consistently about 25% low. For example, the MSD 6000 rpm rev limit chip shuts the engine off when the tach is at about 4500, and the 3000 rpm chip shuts it down at about 2400. It's a 6AL MSD with a tach adapter. Comparison of tach readings with calculated rpm/mph data also indicates an error on the low side of about 25%. Anyone have experience with this kind of problem? Or suggestions on how to fix?
Thanks very much.

Some tachs have a cylinder setting. See if yours is set on 6 instead of 8. SW had a tach like that and I ran around trying to find this exact problem for a weekend until some old guy asked what I had it set to. Yep, mine was set on 6 instead of 8.

Hope this helps

Good idea, thanks. Unfortunately, that seems not to be the problem. Tach face says it's for 8 cyl, and there are no switches or connectors on the back for other configurations.
