MSD distributors
Is, or has anyone used an MSD ready to run pro-billet distributor in a 351w engine and what are your thoughts about it?
|
I put an MSD billet (not sure if it was called Pro Billet or not) distributor with vacum advance in my car 3 or 4 years ago, already had the MSD 6A box,I had been running a factory Ford electronic distributor for 5 or 6 years before.......... The factory one finally broke apart internally about 100 yards from my driveway one day coming home, could not find one at any parts place in town so I got mad an ordered an MSD unit...........best thing I ever did..........hold the Ford unit in your hand and turn it by hand, you'll see a ton of slack in it everywhere, just the opposite with the MSD unit, shortly afterwards took a 700+ mile round trip and my car got 2 miles to the gallon better than I had been getting, only change was the distributor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MSD tech recommended using the mechanical model only for dedicated race cars and the vacum model for street and occasion race................... David |
i replaced my Accel distrib with a MSD Pro Billet distrib, in my 392 cid Ford Racing crate stroker ( 351 w based ). however, due to my cam i had to change the distributor gear that came on the MSD to be compatible. different metal gears are available thru MSD, about another $75. so, if you go the MSD route, read their instructions CAREFULLY that come with it to ensure that the the drive gear metal is compatable with your cam, or you wont go too far. bill.

The problem I have with the MSD billet mechanical advance only distributor is the "factory set-up". The mechanical advance doesn't even START until about 4000 rpm. Which is WAY to high, in fact it's ridiculous. So then you have to buy the "optional" weight and spring kit to get the advance tuned.
My gut tells me that is nothing more than a freakin' marketing ploy. As much as I like MSD I hate the sales part! Again with the MSD-6AL with rev limiter chips. I gaurentee the standard unit WON'T come with the chip YOU need! $50 bucks for the correct "assorted" bag of chips, of which you will use only one. |
Pulled an MSD billet distributor out of my 351/427W about two months ago. It has the steel gear already in place. Vac advance.
Work great and has the "smaller" size cap. If you are interested--send me an email. Switched from the Victor Jr manifold to a Weber ida setup and needed to change to an MSD distributor with mechanical advance. Part number is MSD 8354. You will need an MSD box ex. 6Al Best |
Ernie,
Island pricing doesn't match here. I can pick up a bag of chips for @30 that come with 5 chips in 200RPM increments and get the range I want, 6K, 7K, 8K. |
Dang it, I thought 50 bucks was to high! :D

Ernie;
When my MSD distributor arrived from Summitt it had 3 or 4 sets of springs in the box with the distributor and the insturction sheet for which springs to use for different advance rates, did not have to buy anything else............ The MSD 6AL box does come with 3 chips, granted a 5,6,7k chip,I use the 7k chip for my application and if I let someone else drive my car I slip in the 6k chip, anybody need a 5k chip free????????? The ready to run has the box built in and also has vacuum. MSD p# 8354.

Regarding the RPM chips............... They are nothing more than resistors of varying values. If you have a friend (or yourself) knowledgable in electronics you could test several and ultimately create your own chip with a specific RPM limit. Not a big deal, HELLO Radio Shack!

I've got over 23k miles on my MSD pro billet dist. It came with springs and cams. I took the advice from MSD and put the lightest springs in. I am also running the MSD Digital 6 ignition which comes with a built in start retard and rev limiter.

MSD distributors are far and away the best avaliable. You will still need to dial in an advance curve that makes sense for you.

I love 'em! I put a MSD billet distibutor in my FMS 392W after the duraspark exploded at the Fling last year.
I run 20 BTDC degrees initial and 32 max.....all in by 3000rpm. No Vacuum. To limit the mech advance to 12 degrees, I machined my own spacer/stop bushing. It measures .400" OD. I have a roller cam....so I had to buy a different gear with the distributor. My MSD-6AL rev limit is set @ 6000...and I had to buy a card of chips. ...I am very happy with it all :) :) |
