Tremec 3550 leak - help
Trying to identify the source of leak on my Tremec 3550. I noticed what appears to be a vent on top of the cover and there's a similar one on top of the shifter cover. However, they are not shown in the parts mannual.
Can anyone confirm that these are vents and if so, can they be the leak source? What would cause fluid to come out of the vent and how do I prevent it? Will also take off the cover plate and re-seal it as well. Thanks! http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...G_0021-med.JPG |
I sure don't remember the "vent" being there in my TKO. You may want to contact a dealer. Did you buy it new or did someone build it for racing ? Let me know what you find out, interesting.

If it's indeed a vent....it would be something as simple as the tranny's too full of oil...it's just venting it out.

It's a breather
At least that's what the one on the shifter plate is, and this is the same thing. Not sure why it would have another breather in this location.
I filled the tranny with Red Line to the bottom of the filler hole on the side. Assume that's the right level. Leak started after the weekend at Roebling Road so it was getting hard use. However, I then drained and replaced the fluid and that's when I noticed the leak. Any ideas if filling to the bottom of the filler hole is too much fluid? Thanks! |
That's the level it should be so, it's ok. Are there any cracks ? Check around the filler hole. With the Tremecs, the filler hole is a pipe thread. If you tighten it too much, it can crack. Try getting the tranny real clean, fiil it up with fluid, set some cardboard under it & watch for drip spots to see if there's any cracks, seal or gasket that's bad.

This may not help your situation but here goes - I have a Tremec 3550
and had a problem with the clutch slipping - noticed some leakage at the base of the flywheel cover and pulled the tranny. Turned out to be the front seal on the input shaft of the tranny was leaking, not much, but enough to get on the clutch disk and cause it to slip. Put in a new seal and clutch disk and no more slippage. This was a new transmission so I'm not sure why the seal leaked. There was nothing on the transmission like in your picture. |
May have been a little too full
When I pulled the filler plug to check the level, I had fluid start running out. So I guess it was a little high. I let it run and then sucked a couple of ounces out. Wiped everything down but do need to dry the floor and do the cardboard trick to check for leaks. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the top - either out that vent of the cover over the shifter rails is leaking.
Any "education" on why if it is over filled the fluid would be blowing out the vent on the top of the tranny? Does it get hot and boil up or is the level too high inside and the gears are throwing it up to the top? Thanks! Scott |
