automotive paint: Any superior brand?
Hey all,
Back in my younger days I shot a few cars and did okay. I've used DuPont, Acme, and PPG, all with good results. But I haven't painted anything for about 20 years. I'm looking to get back into painting a few cars. My gut feeling is that, like in the past, no major brand is going to be much better or worse than any other. But not having used anything for so long, I'm soliciting opinions before I commit hundreds of $$$ to something I may end up being unhappy with. My closest supplier carries DuPont, but PPG is only another 20 minutes away. I'm not familiar with any 'newer' brands. Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks, Tom |

I'm kind of in the same boat as you so I've been asking a few painters around here what they use. I seem to get the same answer from most of them- it's hard to get a bad paint these days, but you have to work with each of them for awhile until you understand how they go on best. Around here, PPG is a big seller, but probably because they have a big presence around here. Dupont is also heavily used here in certain shops. Makes me wonder if it is a regional thing, as the DELTRON grumpy mentions is rare around here? If you are interested in using HOK paints, talk to Arizona Slim from this forum. He gave me a quick tutorial on using the HOK paints over the phone one day and I actually understood it! He seems to have most of the kinks worked out and some of the pics he's posted show his work. Black has to be the hardest paint to get right, and his Black Mark I FFR is absolutely gorgeous!- |
Standox is the way to go! It has more OEM approvals than any other paint co. in the world.

Invest in a GOOD gun and use a good urethane primer, sealer. Everything else will just flow into place.

The best paint in the world is Glasurit used by all the top car manufactures but it is dam expensive here in OZ.
