MSD Ignition
I supplied a MSD 6a box to my builder which he wired into the harness. Now after starting the engine He was not able to shut it off. Now he tells me there is a inline oneway resistor missing that allows the ignition to shut down.
Is this true??? Does anyone know a # for same or a description & is it normally included with the ign. box & someone lost it. Thanks Craig Note: Pro Billett distributor, 408W |
Read the installation instruction manual included with the unit. There is some mention of possibly needing a resistor, Chrysler unit? if memory serves me...not a supplied part from MSD

MSD Ignition resistor
If you're using a point distributor you need to use a ballast resistor.
Other then that I've not heard of an inline resistor. I suggest a call to MSD tech Support, they are very helpful and should be able to provide you with the skinny for your application. |
I think he is refering to is a diode that is sometimes installed in the charging circuit. In some installations there is enough current that continues to backfeed into the ignition system while the alternator is still spinning after the key is switched off. The MSD box takes very little current to trigger it consequently it continues to run with the key in the off position.
This should help Rick http://www.msdignition.com/1troub1.htm#runon |
Thanks Rick,
I spoke to MSD Tech Dept today & they pretty much told me what was covered in the site you sent. Thanks much for taking the time to help. Next problem is--- I am using a top loader with a 8.8 rear end with a 3.2something gear. 295/50/r15 yokohama's. Question???? What speedo gear do I need-- # of teeth??? Thanks Craig |
Call david kee toploaders. He can tell you which geer to run.

I tried the diode trick on my car, and it did not help. When you look at the site for MSD, it will tell you which wire to take of the voltage regulator to try it. Alot of guys are using something they put on the carb.
