Want to add Aluminum panel under hood
I am considering adding an aluminum panel to the underside of my hood. Have any of you done this? How was it done and attached?

Invest in a shear/sliproll/brake http://www.harborfreight.com and go for it. It's time consuming and rewarding. To do the door hing covers I bought a shrinker/stretcher.

Oh, I kinda read your post wrong.....I was thinking under the hood as in the compartment, not the hood itself. LMH's suggestion is probably good for that. Otherwise you could just bond the metal with contact cement I would guess.

Thanks...No, I didn't make that. It would be relatively easy if I could weld aluminum though. Working with metal is fun.

Rick, there is a guy out on this site, I want to say his user name is metalmorph, anyway he can plate the bottom of your hood for $$$.
Or, are you thinking a suspended second layer like on some mustangs that made up an air intake system? Brent, everything about your car I like. :D |
Rick, I made a cardboard template and cut the aluminum to fit. My first attempt was to bond it to the underside, but because of the slightly compounded curve of the hood, I ran into problems. I made the next panel larger and riveted it to the underhood liner which suspended the panel leaving a small space between it and the actual hood underside. Because of the curve, it is very rigid so there is no problem with sagging or flexing up and down. I cut a hole centered under the scoop and made a matching cold air box for the carb with a rubber gasket to seal and create a cold air plenum. Works really well. If you prefer to attach the panel directly to the underside , the next option I looked at was to install a set of external hood edge rivets and scoop rivets, using them as attachment points for the aluminum panel.

Why don't you buy a hood from Kirkham's and make your car fit it, I thought about that when I was looking at a glass car. John |
I am not sure how your hood is constructed, but on an ERA you can make a piece that slides between the fiberglass hood frame and hood skin. Cut out the piece close to the shape you need, then you can slit it from the scoop hole then to the rear of the piece. Then you can overlap the rear a little bit to put a crown in the piece to match the hood skin. Use .025 aluminum so you can form it easily.

That is exactly what I had in mind, my hood is similarly constructed. I think I remember the original poster saying that he had used material that was too stiff for the compund curve and had to go to thinner material.
