Rack n pinion what?
So none of you guys have ever installed one, then how do you drive you cars? I will just work it out my self thanks anyway.

Nope, most of us just use a length of rope attached to each steering arm and steer them billy cart style. I'm looking at changing to a 2x4 timber front axle so I can us my feet for power steering.

Yes this was and old post and yes I did get the info I needed. I went with a 4x4 axle pressure treated and cable not rope nobody uses rope any more.

I reckon it all depends on your wheel and tyre combination. Using pram wheels you need a bit more flex in your axle to save the spokes on rough pavement. (Especially with a heavier driver at the rope). Solid lawn mower wheels are better with the more flexable pine 3x2 axle as it helps with the rough ride. They are good in the corners though and can generate a nice controlable slide where the pram wheel will sometimes dig in or even colapse all together.
How do you go with gripping the cable over the old rope setup? I guess driving with good solid pair of leather workmans gloves would help. They are also handy for stabilising yourself in tight turns when leaning in and putting a hand down. Cheers Michael |

I know the real reason you use mower wheels....they're wider thats why? :o So what do ya use for brakes?...Don't tell me the ole' nike runners cuz they just wear out too quick on the track. :cool: I can recommend those genuine Williams mountain men riding boots. Dig the heels in and it's like instant stop. :CRY: Besides...no need to change em when ya get home.....just put the spurs on and awayyyyyyyy you go. :eek: |

The 2x2 pine right hand lever brake against the rear wheel is usually the go but it can be a bit inefectual on steeper hills. At this point rubbing off speed is usually done by inducing tail slides. However over zealous use of this technique can induce face slides which while they do slow you down quite rapidly are rather more painful.
