Delampe - I am willing to try anything and everything. I will go pick up a new coil today. I agree the cheapest parts get changed first. This will be the last part in the ignition I have not changed or checked minus the box. Warren - I am with you, I can't believe it jumped timing either for the same reason. Jerry - I have read about the ionazation also. I will check into it. Again thanks to all - I hope to get it worked out and pass on the verdict soon. Has fuel in tank gone bad, or are filters getting plugged? Do you have the small OEM canister or bronze filters on each inlet of double pumper carb?

Dlampe - you are the man!!!! Other than an ugly yellow Accel coil (they did not have the MSD) my cars is fixed.
This is why this forum is so great!!! I will be ordering a new MSD to get rid of the yellow. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bruce |

What brand and model coil were you using, (the one that went bad)? How old was it? Funny how a coil can be the culprit, I was guessing that could be the problem as I was reading this thread. Coils tend to go bad slowly in my experience. Glad you got to the problem fixed! |

It was the standard 8202 Blaster 2 for MSD ignitions. Has 10,000 miles on it. I have never had a coil go bad on any car for 30 years! I must have gotten the one lemon - I hope? Definately feels good to work through it! Bruce |
I am glad to hear that your car is fixed. You might want to order the MSD blaster2 high vibration coil. It is a black coil instead of the red one. I also moved my coil off of the engine and on to the inside fender to cut down on heat and vibration. So far no problems!

M I have a complete Mallory system. I converted from an older HyFire IV box to an new HyFire VI with programable rev limiter.When I started the engine ran fine while warming up in the alley.I would start to drive the car away from home I could usually get about two miles or so away then it would all go to crap. It started missing and got worse. I'd turn aroud and start back. The engine would idle fine but getting the car rolling was terrible. The Mallory unit has a bypass plug that eliminates the box. It ran fine with the box eliminated. I returned the box (Still within the warranty ) and ordered a replacment that ran just fine.

You may want to check you spark plug gaps to make sure that they are not excessive due to erosion. An eroded gap can put strain on the coil and this sometimes leads to coil failure. |
I'm with rblong, at this point it would be an easy thing to eliminate the fuel by getting a gas can and dropping a short piece of fuel line in. I have had water in the gas that seemed to separate to the top until I drove it and then would start causing problems when it was agitated by the movement.

I will check plugs and such, since I was wondering if there was something that caused the failure. I also want to check the plug gap. MSD recommends .050 -.060 for up to 10.5/1 compression. I do not think I set the gap that wide when I installed new plugs about 600 miles ago.
I certainly learned alot about the MSD ignition during this process and want to thank everyone again. I will also have a spare "yellow" coil I will carry as soon as my new MSD coil arrives. This was the first coil I have ever lost, but I bet if I loose another I will recognize it pretty quick. Also learned how to rebuild the distributor, test wires, test MSD box etc. It was a good experience all and all. Of course I can say that now that it is fixed!!!!! Bruce |
