Pedal Location
Hi Guys,
I'm going to build a floor mount pedal assembly for my Everett-Morrison and I need some help with location. How far back from the end of the foot box should the pivot point be so I don't run out of pedal travel? It may be just a question of how far the pedal needs to move to bottom out the master cylinder, but I would rather know what a "standard" distance is, if there is a standard...... The distance will dictate the design of the assembly, masters facing forward or back, so I can't just build it first and bolt it in the "right "place later. Thanks for any help! Jon |
How far back? Pivot at the back of the foot box! Well, not really. But what you don't want to do is have the pedals over center in relationship to the plain in which you are applying pressure. Simplified, you don't want the pedals to go past the point that is 90 degrees from the line drawn from your hip to the pedal... you loose leverage after that point. Pedal travel through an arc which changes the pedal ratio. Put in a heal brace and positive stops for the clutch and gas (unless you have them else where) as well. Make the box so that it can be easily moved forward and back.

The era web site has some rough drawing of floor mounted pedals.

It would be nice if I could just "build the box so I could easily move it forward and back", but......as I said, the design of the box depends on the location of the box. Kind of a catch 22. After finding some scale drawings from Wilwood I think I know what to do.
I've seen some pics posted by you guys that have built your own pedal box, but I can't seem to find them with a "search". If you have pics in your gallery please let me know so I can take a look. Thanks! Jon |
Jon,
Step one is to figure out the spacing and angle of the pedals. I just found the most comfortable heel/toe car I have driven and measured that (a BMW). Then, I made the pedal box that would fit the chassis and let me position the pedals in exactly in the right place. In my case the pedal box was off to the right of the perfect pedal locations. So, I had to heat the pedal arms with a torch and bend them about an inch to the left. That's the best place to start. Paul |
I built mine from scratch, see pics. it was in and out of the c. over and over, measure, over and over. hard to give instructions....I tested and checked over and over...........just do it........
