Steering Play (slop)

I have a Shell Valley, with 2800 mile on it. It has a good bit of play in the steering (about 2 inches). I have traced it down to the rack. Does anyone know if the rack can be adjusted?

Thanks

I'm not sure what rack you have, but there should be an adjustment on yours. It will be on top, a large nut with a hex nut that you adjust with an allen wrench. Loosen the large nut, and with someone sitting at the wheel, have them slightly move the wheel back and forth while you tighten the allen nut until the slack dissapeers, then lock it down with the large nut. Just don't overtighten the allen nut.

if you have a stock or cheap aftermarket rack, the best thing you can do is trash it and get a Flaming River rack, there has been numerous posts about rack problems, most of the time, a new rack is the answer
