crying in CT

Was able avoid the hassles of a total inspection, new vin # and the transformation of my 1983 car to a 2006 (composite requirements in the great state of Connecticut) by simply showing up at DMV with the previous out of state title and sales tax monies. For some reason they just gave me temporary plates for my ERA 427, however, they want to register the car as an 83 - which unfortunately means emissions.
Took the car down to my local shop for some pre-emissions tuning and then headed off for the local test center.
They ran it in a test mode first, then tinkered and tried to get her to pass. After a couple runs, the paint on the side of the car had bubbled due to the heat from the side pipes and no air passing over them to keep things cool.

For those of you in the tri-state area that heard that strange sound yesterday afternoon, it was just me screaming!!!

Now I have bubbled paint and a failed emissions slip.

Next time I go back, I am bringing two pieces of sheetrock to slip between the pipes and the body, but it is to little-to late.

Anybody know of any solutions to get through the sniffer?

d smith, might want to be careful using the temp plates which are not allowed on a Composite in CT. The DMV inspectors may ( ? ) ask questions when you have the out of state inspection performed and they notice the temp plates.

I also was able to obtain temp plates for a legally registered and titled out of state Cobra when paying the sales tax and just asking for the Temp plates as the out of state title and registration indicated a 1966 Ford. The out of state paperwork was all legal, for that state, and had not been prepared by a Title company.

However, using the temp plates for the CT out of state inspection did not work and I had to go the Composite route and follow all the requirements. DMV Inspectors immediately recognized the Cobra as a composite/kit car. Fortunetly, my explanation on how I obtained the temp plates was accepted, i.e., not knowing CT would not accept the out of state registration and title for inspection and registration.

Register it in Maine. I think the temp plates are a real no-no. The paint damage may be due to a "too lean" mixture.
