Total timing is 46 degrees?!?!?

Hello guys I am new here , nice to meet you all I have a cobra body I purchased from someone I will leave un-named down in florida
I built a tube chasssis and have a mild 302 (stock)with tremec 5 speed and jag rear.
My problem is I set the initial timing at 6-8 and at 2500 rpm I have total and it's 46 degrees????? no ping but ??? Is my timing light broken why don't I have holes in my pistons, way too rich also??

EFI or carb? Is it a vacuum advance?

Woodz428 05-17-2006 05:49 PM

I'd recurve the dist. It would probably be better with 12-16 fegrees initial and about 38 total. That would be a nice starting place. 46 is too much. you may noy have any ping for a number of reasons...long overlap cam, low compression...or you may not be hearing it over the exhaust. It will also depend on how quick it comes in, but I think 46 is too much regardless of when it comes in.

Thanks

I have a carb and vacuum advance, edelbrock performer with dual plane manifold. It likes when the timing is around 12-16 initial.
shouldn't timing come in gradually? , I think the springs are wore out or just too soft cause it is maxs out (total timing)by 2700 rpm I would think you want it to come in graduallly and be at total at around 3500 rpm , am I correct?

The operative thing here is the vacuum advance. It must be disconnected while you measure advance.

blykins 05-18-2006 08:55 AM

That's what I was trying to get at about the vacuum advance....I knew there was a connection, but I've never messed with vacuum advance distributors....all the ones I've had were mechanical.

go300mph 05-18-2006 12:51 PM

Disconnect vacuum advance while measuring total

I am sure this is how I measured it with the vacuum advanced disconnected and the port on the carb plugged. **)

blykins 05-18-2006 03:44 PM

Sounds like you just need to change springs. I didn't know they made any that advanced around 30 degrees...

go300mph 05-19-2006 06:26 AM

How 30 degrees is possible

The little arms (not sure of technical term) have a number stamped on them like 13L or 15L or 18L this is the amount of advance each will add
ie: both are 13L then you will get 26 degrees. of course mine are not ledgable.
Anyone have ideas were you can buy distributor parts?

Mick,
What brand distrbutor do you have ?

I think you are missing the bushing that determines the maximum amount of centrifigul advance.
The springs & weights deal with the rate of advance, not total.

go300mph 05-19-2006 07:56 AM

Type Distributor

I have a stock 302 with the stock distributor with a vacuum advance the tag on it says
4K 23
E5ZE
12127
BA

any info on this appreciated

I would bypass the vacuum can and cap it and the vacuum fitting and run the initial and see what it is total then. From the # in the dist. I am guessing that you may have been tapped into ported instead of manifold vacuum.

I shall return

I will double check total timing and get back to you all
I am quite certain I checked it correctly but you never know.
Thank you all very much
I will post my results

Before adjusting, be certain that your timing marks are valid.
i.e. TDC #1 is 0° on the marks.

go300mph 05-22-2006 06:33 AM

TDC = zero

Good Call I double check that as well.
Thanks to all
Mick
