Have you painted over ceramic coating?
I am thinking of giving this a try to improve the appearance of my old pipes. Obviously, the ceramic is worth keeping on there if I can coat/paint them with something a little more attractive.
What did you use? How well did it hold up? Anything special needed? Have to scuff the surface? Prime with anything? Thanks Buzz |
We blacked out a set of headers after having them done in silver. It worked ok but will scratch off easily to reveal the coating underneath.

The sidepipes on ''hey, little cobra's" car are p[ainted vht white over ceramic. No problems at all....just touch up now and then.

VHT? very hight temp?
|
POR high temp. paint cures very well over ceramic, I painted a set of silver headers with black and it even stayed glossy.
|
that is cool, POR products are great...a pain to do all the steps, but I used the regular stuff the first time the other day.

As mentioned to me by another CC member:
VHT Flameproof Coatings ( not the enamel ) http://www.cacustomcoatings.com/flam...-coatings.html His pipes ( and mine ) were ceramic coated by Swain Technologies http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10539 I had previously used Hirsch hi-temp, but the next time I will be using the VHT. While the Hirsch was OK, every indication is the VHT will be better. |
I had my pipes black ceramic coated years ago. I've touched them up with flat black high temp spray and even BBQ flat black spray with no problems.
When done I do heat cycle them once, allowing to cool for strong adhesion. |
Swaintech coating is a white ceramic coating. It is designed to be functional as heat insulation (think fiberglass wrap) vs an esthetic covering and will fully accept a high temp paint.
