Adjusting Headlights

I want to adjust the headlights and am not sure how to go about it. I was thinking about drawing some lines on my garage wall and then backing the car up a certain distance and make them level while turning the drivers light a little in toward the passenger light.
Is there a distance that a person would want the lights to focus on as to give you the most distance/focal ratio?

This procedure worked well for me.

Accurate headlight adjustment by Woodson H.
On level ground, put your vehicle in front of a wall as close as possible. With tape, put 2 crosses on the wall that correspond with the vertical and horizontal center lines of both headlights. Back up 25 ft., keeping the vehicle centered with your crosses on the wall. Turn on headlights. Low Beams should be hitting the lower right sections of the crosses. High Beams should split the cross hairs. Turn the horizonal and vertical adjusting screws (located at the headlights) to make adjustments.

Yeh, thanks! I knew I was on the right track. I will back the car up 25 feet and use the said focusing point on the wall. That should get me pretty close!
