Headlights are haunted
Turned on the headlight switch last night and the driving lights came on, but not the headlights.
So I threw the switch on and off a few times. Still no headlights. So I decided it was best to go home (only about 1.5 miles). Started to back the Cobra into the garage ... and the headlights are ON !!!!! Turned the switch on and off anbout 10 times, everything OK, so I went back on my ride! Anyone out there have any suggestions for my SPF? Is there a relay on the headlights? If so, where is it located. |
If the switch is a 2 position IE: parking lights, then headlights & parking lights; check the switch to see if it is sending 12 Volts to the headlight relay. If it is, replace the relay. If it's a Lucas switch replace it for general practice.

I have the type of switch with the glass fuse ontop, My original switch the contacts that held the fuse got lose or something and got hot ,turning blue losing any tension on the fuse. Left me at 2:30 in the morning driving home looking for the curbs with the flases of the four-ways.

I has a similar problem on my SPF 1735. The headlight relay was the bad actor. Replacement part is VW part # 111-941-583. It is located in the fuse panel on my car.

Thanks for part number. Relay has been OK until last night. Tried to order one from local VW dealer - $32 and 1 week delivery. Closest relay stocked in a VW dealer was 400 miles away. Both headlights? I have a problem with just my drivers side not being as bright as the other. I I broke the original and had it replaced a couple of years ago, and ever since, I've had the problem. I don't drive the car much at night - in fact hardly ever, but just wondering if the relay is for both, or maybe, I just got a bad light. Maybe I'll just get two new super brights.:LOL: TL |
Yep - both headlights. I just talked with Dennis Olthoff and he said he would send info on how to change headlights to the superbrite ones, and change the socket on the turn signal so it becomes the driving light rather than the headlight. You may already have that setup. Dennis mentioned a build # change point but I forgot it.

Warren: This is my backup, in case my dim or flicker functions burn out. Actually, I haven't had any problems with my genuine Lucas switches. My lights have gone out twice in the past though, once with a failed fusable link and once with an inline circuit breaker, both made in the US of A. I do have a rather unique setup, though. When I turn on the headlights I need to flash the high beams to make them work, But they work just fine then. I probably need to bring a six pack over to my electronics buddy and have him figure out just what the hell is going on. Next time I'll build it myself. :p Rich

Similar problem with SPF 1855. Headlights go out, flip the switch a few times and they have come back on - so far.

HELP
Changed the headlight relay - did not fix the problem. Checked the switch and it is working properly. Everything works correctly except the low beams do not come on (both lights). The high beams do work when I click the turn signal lever. Helllllllllllllllpppppppppppppppppppppp:mad: |
I was driving my car last night and the High Beams were stuck on when I turned on the lights. Could'nt get the highs off. Clicking the high beam switch a bunch of times worked once to get the beams on low, but when I tried it again, it got stuck on High Beams.
Maybe just change the relay? Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated Thanks JB |

I am not familiar with the Superformance wiring, but on mine I had separate leads for the high and low beams. My high/low beam switch was the turn signal lever. I also had separate fuses for high and low beam. I lost the high beams once and traced the voltage loss back to the connector that came out of my steering column. If you have separate leads that you can get to, try checking the voltage and trace it back until you find where it is not getting through to the lights. Ron %/ |
Check bulbs first...wiring in and out of switch second...trace to lights third

Warren, If all else fails two very bright flashlights taped to the top of the fender work well. You just have to get out to turn them off and on unless you run a switch to the cockpit. Wish I was close enough to help you as the wiring can't be to difficult. Do you have your wiring schematic for the car? Ron :) |
