Testing Fuel Gauge

The stock fuel gauge in my 66 mustang is NOT working, What is the best way to test it to see if its broken or if it's possibly the Sending unit?? I tried a multmeter on it,... no continuity,.. but I don't know if it's suppose to have continuity....
Thanks
RZ

If you ground the wire going to the sending unit, the gauge should go to full. This will tell you if the gauge is workiing or not. Also, you can take the sending unit out of the tank and use an ohm meter on the sending unit to test it. The resistance should change when you move the float arm up and down. Good luck. I have to do the same with a 57 T Bird today. Jim
