Custom front hub material
I am about to start the process of making one piece front knock off hubs, and my engineer is researching what grade material to use. I requested 4340 but this is hard to machine and maybe overkill!
Using Trigo hub adapters on the rear, these bolt on to the T/bird flangle, tested them for hardness and they are just ordinary mild steel, and all they have to do is be strong enough for the knock off nut, as the drive is done through the pins, I am a bit disappointed these hubs arent made out of something a bit better quality but I guess thats all thats necessary, and they have the machining process to consider and pricing. |
We just use 41L40 for ours.

Thank you, I would be happy to go with 4140 steel, sounds good Also I am looking for one piece rear adapters suit 8.8" T/bird setup, I have emailed a US supplier (AMP) but no reply as yet, they might have them for late mustang, which may fit my application, I haven't read of anyone using these to date, but would save a lot of time etc if I can find a supplier? |

We use 17-4 for our stub axles in the front. This is the normal material used on all of the off road hubs that we make for various race teams. Also, this is the material that Reynard used in their champ cars. (We made the hubs, so that is how I know.) |

17-4 material, is this like aluminium tool plate grade, which is about same as steel? |

17-4 is a stainless steel. |
Same material George (AMP) uses for the front uprights.

Thanks I didnt click at the time, same family as 18-8, 316. I am using Jaguar uprights, which are a bit basic but we will make them work and now seriously considering as Aussie Mike has done machine up some billet alloy hubs, as I have to move the wheel flange inwards 1.25" to get the wheel in correct position under the front guard. I think he used 2011 T6 billet. That's supposedly aircraft quality free machining billet aluminum. other alloys like 6061-T6 should work well, any recommendations appreciated!!!! Might as well keep the car light as possible, and still durable! Mickmate, still working hard on your car? |

Thanks for your encouraging words, man this car is a mission, and my standards are a bit high for my ability at times, but I suppose I am persistent, and keep doing the job until it meets my standard! Re the photos, I am unable to post any photos on this website due to not getting them small enough for CC to accept, my 10 year old Macintosh computer with Photoshop 4.1 is good for doing photos but...! I am about due to buy a new computer soon, and my daughter just gave me a digi camera 4.1 megapixels for pre- Christmas present, so that part is good enough! |
