talk me out of EFI
I am looking into the getting one of the mass air flow efi's. Has anyone had any major problems with these or anything I whould be aware of or conscerned about? Why this versus carb?
Thanks! Dan |
I talk to a friend of mine that is a mech.(trust his opinion) yesterday about efi vs. carb. He told me that unless you are going for an original look then why wouldn't you go with efi. In the long run it is easier option. In a build it takes a little longer to hook it up, and get it adjusted right.

I believe that the consistancy of EFI vs Carb is major. Throttle response, milage, and some of the new systems give more HP. Computorized allows for control altitude and other adjustments that you don't have to do, the computor does them for you. The original look is with the carb, and someone that know how to tune carbs can do it all themselves. Simplicity can be there with EFI after the install. Wiring can be a pain, but may be worth it. just my $.11 (inflation)

Yeah the mass-flow efi systems look pretty good. Easy to setup it seems and they look pretty original, Hard to tell they aren't carbs :) Just wondering if they are really worth it or a major pain in the ass.

i got edelbrocks efi and so far no problems , except the height of the manifold caused limited air cleaner selection and you cant use to radical of a cam or their wont be the proper amount of vacume to run right. mine was very easy to install (two or three wires) and it fired right up. good luck.

dlowman,
I have been using Mass Flo efi's on 80% or more on the Backdraft's I built this year. It is a great system. It provides easy starting, plenty of power, no adjustments, easy to install, and they have the air cleaner so you can use a cobra style air cleaner. I really enjoy mine, well uh I sold it. One of my demos that I'm working on is going to be a 418 Mass Flo EFI with over 540hp! and working on a customer now that is installing a Dart 427w with the Mass Flo. It really speaks for it self. Give me a call and I can answer your questions, and I sell them as well. 859-630-9099. Bill |
But the man asked...
But the man asked us to talk him out of it!!!
Ummm. It uses ELECTRICITY!!! AND COMPUTERS!!! Electricity can electrocute an elephant. http://www.railwaybridge.co.uk/topsy.html Do you want THAT in your engine compartment? Computers! We all know about them..., don't we? Please..., for all our sakes..., think about it..., I'm sure you'll do the right thing. |
EFI's are for weenies... (did it work?)
|
well you guys did a lousy job of talking me out of it lol... looks like I am going to buy one now.
|
SCOBRAC nailed it. I find this trend toward making a replica Cobra more 'modern' and more 'efficient' annoying at best.
My friend recently converted his EFI to a Holley carb. Man it looks WAY better than the myriad of hoses and wires and sensors and other crap that was there before. If you want fuel injection, buy a freakin' Volvo. ..tongue in cheek guys, I KNOW EFI is 'better', and I still don't care! |
EFI offers better low to midrange driveability & mileage. As for WOT,there is no HP advantage over a PROPERLY set up carb.
|
Yep
I think he's going the way of the EFI....so much for dead elephants and electricity......LOL |
don't do it.......
don't do it........don't do it.....do not go EFI.........why?
I have no idea........just wanted to see if i could help you out and talk you out of it............oh, and BTW...i have a brand new CHP, mass flo, 550hp and 550 torq. with the air cleaner on and anodized fuel rails.........looks very nice.....course it is not in the car yet.....oh just details..!!!!!!!! either way you will have fun.......but, my builder talked me into EFI only afer I saw mass flo...looks pretty close to carbs as you can get........... ok, so it didn't help............ fred z. |
Dan;
EFI has been known to cause cancer in lavatory rats!! Bill Stradtner |
A lavatory? Sounds like their research is in the toilet. :D
|
KISS.
Use a mechanical fuel pump, have one line from the tank to motor, line from pump to carb. No messy wires for injectors, TPS, MAF harness, crank trigger, etc. Cheap too, and works well. |
See if this discourages you:
|
The best argument for not going the EFI, is the look! When you pop that hood, people expect to see one or two or three Holleys! I rest my case!

Stinky Carbs....
Aren't Replica's supposed to Replicate ??? Last night i had dinner out at the beach and was seated outside right next to my car. There must have been 40 people looking at it in about 30 min. The main question was... "is that the real one?" It's pretty original except for braking system which they can't really see.... so i say Stinky Carbs is the way to go !!! Just have to find someone who knows how to tune them in.
Keith |
Wait a minute, you mean replicas are supposed to 'replicate'?
WHOA, what a concept, I think it's been slowly swept under the rug so long we might have forgot! |
