How the heck do you remove belhousing alignment dowels??????

Geesh, trying to remove alignment dowls to replace with weld in collars for long term alignment. I can't get those bass turds out to save my life. On one, I have tried grinding flat spots on top/bottom to get with a set of vice grips, but it's not budging!

What a pisser!!!! :JEKYLHYDE

Lube them up good with a penetrating oil. Try a small pipe wrench. It will grip better than the vice grips.

You could also try drilling and tapping them an thread in a slide hammer.

Thanks! Stupid question. Is penetrating oil different than wd40 or whatever?

both will work, maybe... a better option is to heat the bell housing (not the dowel) and they will slip out.

When you say heat the bellhousing, do you mean the block? The dowels are in the block side.

Tack weld a nut on the end then wrench it off.

Oh, that's too easy! :) Why in the hell didn't I think of that!!! Or tack on the end of a slide hammer. Nice!

Kroil will work just a hair easier.

If they are bass turds, welding will need to be a bit more than a tack.

Weld first, cool, spray with Kroil and wait ( have a beer ).

Weld on some allthread (or a bolt with the head cut off), put a piece of pipe over it and put a washer and nut on; tighten the nut against the pipe and it will pull the dowel out.

Beautiful! Love that idea.

Brent, I just went through this. Had exactly the same difficulty.

I pulled the motor and heated the block--they were out in five minutes.
