?? electric power brakes ?
Any one heard of an electric power brake set up that does not use a vac canister on the master cylinder?
|
The only thing that comes to mind is the Hydraboost.

Somebody out there makes a setup that uses the power steering pump to supply boost. I don't remember who. Bill Stradtner |

There are a couple of systems.
http://www.raybestos.com/OnLineTraining/cpt-010.htm An electric vacuum pump is also made for cars with power brakes but not enough vacuum. |
We use the Power Master brake unit from Buick Grand Nationals but many Buick models used it as well. Our choice to use it was driven by ability to keep the firewall clean and uncluttered as all our units are remote mounted. Another reason and plus is the 4 wheel 4 disc brakes need a larger volume of fluid movement than a mechanical system can support. We do use an adjustable proportioning valve to balence the system. The system when adjusted properly gives you a perfect solution with low pedal effort yet great feedback to the driver and is a very linear assisted pedal.
The unit took some hits for a bad reputation in its day but was more electrical support problems on the Buick side. One problem with unit its self was solved with a grey switch that replaced a problematic black control switch. Make sure you have the grey colored switch. The vac motors to supplement a low vac supply still need the firewall mounted unit so you loose the cleaner look of standard Tilton master cylinders but they do work. |
Vettestr,
THanks, that sounds like it may have some potential for me. Is the electric motor constant run? or does it need some kind of feed back wire from the pedal or mastercylinder? |
Hey GF,
The motor only runs when a low pressure sw. signals a run command and then turns it off when accumulator reaches set point. All of these commands are internal and done via a grey switch. The first generation units had issues that were corrected with new designed sw., the easy way to tell generation of unit or if upgraded is to look for the GREY pressure sw. on master cyl. This unit is small and compact with Hyd. motor hanging below the master cyl but we mount the motor and the master cyl unit side by side for ease of installation. The Hydraboost or unit that is run from the PS pump was large to huge by comparison to the Power Master unit. The PM unit also has an aluminum master cyl for weight savings. The Hydra system always seemed to leak, for me at least and I just got tired of it always marking its spot. The way you new you were low on fluid is when it quit dripping!! |
You might try this electric set-up.
http://www.abspowerbrake.com/ElectricHPpage.html Interesting concept. I found it on Lonestar Classics cobra (LS427) forum. I'm just getting my car running and pedal pressure is so great I can't lock them up. May just need to broken in and balance bar adjusted. I hope that's all. I hope I don't have to boost the brakes. Good luck JT |
