Wiring Problemo
Hi Guys,
It's been 10 years and I'm down to a brake fluid leak, and three "Mystery Wires".......I hate Electrical. The leak I can deal with, it's the wires that have me more than a little confused. I've got the E-Z Wiring kit from Finish Line and I've got 3 wires that I don't know what to do with, Hazard, Brake Switch, and Turn Flasher. All three are in the "Column Section", but they don't have a schematic showing what they should hook up to. I'm running a VW column and it's set up for GM. I'm thinking that maybe "Turn Flasher" should hook to ignition "on" power, and the other two should hook up to full time power......or maybe not. Did I mention that I hate Electrical. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Jon Miller |
it depends on what side of the flashers the wire is connected to, also on the brake switch, it depends on what side it is hooked to, most of the time, the flashers plug into the fuse box, if so, they already have power to them, and the wire will have to go to the trun switch relay, the hazard wire will have to go to the hazard switch relay, the brake switch should have power on one side and the other side should go to the brake switch relay, if you are using a VW setup you will have to have relays to make the flashers work, I saw a thread where someone mentioned a relay that has both trun signals and the emergency flasher all in one relay, I used three relays to make my system work, if you are using the two tail lights then the setup is easy, if you are using the single tail light then the relay system must be used, sorry but the rear lights can be a real pain in the butt

Relays?!?! We don't need no stinken Relays!*
I think that maybe the power comes out of the turn and hazard flasher(s), throught the wires I have "Left Over", and into their respective switches. Since I can't get the bleeding at the rear master to stop, I'll just give E-Z Wiring a call on Tuesday. I had hoped to be on the road today...Oh well. Did I mention that I now hate brake lines too? -Jon *I MAY actually need relays, but be too stupid to understand why...I reserve the right to add relays later should nothing work, or a fire starts. If a fire does start, I hope to have enough car left to add a relay to....... P.S. Does anybody know why I can't get my I. F. brake fitting to stop leaking? |
like I said, if you have a VW turn signal switch, you will need relays, or no turn signals, also, if you are talking about the double flare on the brake line, it maybe cracked, look for a hair line crack in the flare

I was able to solve the brake leak by changing out the stock steel Wilwood M/C adaptor for a brass one. Nice soft brass seals better. :)
I've got 4 tail lights, so according to the guy at E-Z wiring I will not need any relays. "Turn Flasher" is the power from the flasher into the turn switch. "Hazard" is the power from the flasher into the hazard switch, which then gets spliced into the parking lights at the load side of the switch. "Brake Switch" picks up power for the brake lights once I find a hot wire to hook it to. Thanks for the help! Jon |
correct, if you wire the elements individual, you can get by without relays, the VW switch is one wire in and two wires out, I used the single bulb rear lights and had to use relays, as I mentioned before the four bulb setup is much easier to use, glad you found your leak, looks like you are on your way
