taking out 9in ford axles help?
Hi All,
Great site and there is great information here. Thanks to all who answer questions. I have a novice question, and I know that I should know this, but I've never had to work on a Ford 9" rear.:confused: What is the proper way to pull the axles from a 9" Ford? (Moser) Is there a certain procedure other than just unbolting everything and force them apart? Any help is greatly appreciated.:D Thanks, Duff |
Once the bearing retainers are onbolted, the ideal situation is to use a slide hammer bolted to the axle face. In lieu of that bolt on a wheel and jerk it in and out and the axle should easily come loose.

axle removal
There should be little interference in the fit of the bearing inside of the housing
tube. Once the retainer is unbolted, they usually slide right out with little or no effort. If you do have to use a lot of force to pull the axle out, you might want to open up the bearing recess slightly in the housing tube so the bearing fits with only a slight amount of interference. That will reduce the chance of bearing damage next time the axle is pulled. There only has to be enough interference to keep the outer bearing race from spinning inside the housing tube which is unlikely anyway with the weight of the vehicle on it. ....Fred |
I have had two different encoutners with Ford Nines, either the axels come out without so much as a hand grabbing it to a slide hammer having to pull it out. Either way, unbolting the T bolts at the flange is the last step, make sure you have a number of rags to collect the oil that follows.

so there are no clips in the pumpkin to remove? then if replacing the pumpkin to change gearing just remove the bolts in any order? what is the torque when replacing? thanks for any help.

No clips in the 9" Ford setup, however there is in the 8.8. Torque on the 3/8" bolts for the axle retainers is about 30 FT lbs approx. Not a critical torque value in my opinion.

Rick is right, make sure they are tight. The seal will leak if you do not tighten them down, been there, done that.
