Drag racing in DFW

I have never been on a strip with my own car. Raced a lot in my younger years (and a few places last couple years) in places I was not supposed to. Been to a few run what you brung back in high school.

I would love to go to Texas Motorplex or any other place to run my car. I do not know the first thing about procedures, rules etc.
I know Texas Motorplexs has some events coming the next couple months that look more open to me.

Is this the kind of place you can show up to and get help, or is anyplace a better place to go and kind of learn the ropes.

I wonder of if any of the local clubs team up and rent anyplace. I would just love to go play around at a strip and don't know the first thing about it.

Any of you DFW guys help with some info?

Bruce

I'd be interested in this, too. I've done the strip in Tulsa a couple of times, that's it. I don't know of any places in our area. Texas motorplex is about it. Couple of road courses. The Dallas group isn't as interested in track events as it used to be. Before I joined up there seemed to be quite a few track events, now I don't know any of the folks- just a bunch of corvette racers! :p
Let me know what you find out. :)

I have taken my cobra to the Denton Dragway once. and have been there several times with a friend and his Lightning. They have friday night test and tune nights so you can take lap after lap if you want to play. Its alot of fun to run what you brung. Here is there webpage www.dentondragway.com. It an 1/8 mile track but still alot of fun.

Damn - should have said gals also! My wife would be slapping me around for that!!!

Thanks Jeff for your lead. I will make some phone calls and see whats up.

Maybe we can pick a place and meet, that way the experienced folk can help out the greeners (like me).

Denton is really close to me, but Texas Motorplex is a long way. Vice versa for you folks on the east side.

I will get back to the post.

I went to Denton and Kennedale this past weekend - what a good time. Did not take my Cobra Saturday night because I had gone by earlier and they were closed. Sure enough when I went back in my street car there they were running anything from Cadillacs to trucks - time after time - one after another. I took my Cobra to Kernnedale Sunday and they were racing - but racing JR dragsters so I had to just watch - but it was still fun. Either place seems responsive. I could not tie anyone down since it was race time, but I will talk to each soon and post rules and details.

I have yet to get a real person on the phone since this weekend, but I will make contact and see whats up.

Bruce,

I have bracket raced for the last 20 yrs all over the midwest, I am sure that what ever drag strip you go to you will find people very willing to help with any questions. Just make a call to the track before going and ask what is needed to run like a racing jacket, helment, arm restraints, gloves, neck support, if they enforce the 2 yr date on the seat belts(NHRA is pretty bad about that one).
The main thing is get yourself there and have fun, don't worry about doing somthing wrong everybody does.

When I went to Denton Dragway last year with my Cobra all they checked was that I had seatbelts and a helmet. They also will not allow you to wear shorts or sandals. Which makes sense anyway. If you get to Denton early on a test and tune night you can make alot of passes before it gets busy. That way you can get used to the track and what you need to do when you get up to the lights. I also liked that you get your timing slip after each run as well. So you can see if your improving or not. For 15 or 20 dollars its a great way to spend a night at the track.

Fun Ford Weekend is this weekend at Texas Motorplex. Sept. 15-17. Here is a link to there web site http://www.texasmotorplex.com/ I will be out there on Saturday racing a blue 83 f-150 Flarside, powered by a 530hp 351w. My cobra will be there also but I will not be racing it. I has just been finished, with less than 10 miles, and it is For Sale. Hope to see some of you out there.

Have been to Kennedale, Denton and Ennis lately checking them out. Ennis is a 1/4 mile and has more rules than most of us want to put up with. Denton and Kennedale both 1/8 mile and a lot more lax about doing things.

Denton is a piece of cake to show up on like a Friday evening or Saturday and do their test and tune. Very few people and it is truly a run what you bring deal.

I been trying to get someone at Kennedale or Denton to put a little time aside for Cobras, but no takers so far.

We might just meet at Denton or Kennedale one night?

BTW - I went to Ennis for the NHRA runs. If you have never been standing 30 yards from a 7000 HP rail when she make a run, you need to! The percussion is so great you cannot see straight - literally unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!
