Engine Paint-what is the best type?
Okay all, what is the common opinion on engine paint?
Do I use a two component paint or a spray can? What do I do for aluminum heads? Is there a primer to use? I have not painted an engine in years and I don't know what the best method is today? Thanks, MC |
I have found that the kit that POR15 sells works out great. It is not cheap ,however after 2 years in my cobra the ford corporate blue looks new. Look on the POR15 web site.

enduro high temp engine paint, can be found at any auto parts store, most folks do not paint the heads, you want the heads to dissipate the heat, paint will imped this

I really hate to admit this but on my engine I used RUSTOLEUM Royal Blue in the spray can. Five years and it looks as good as new and the color is nearly dead on for early Ford blue. Obviously, no rust anywhere. Although what I did sounds weird, the idea came from a reputable engine builder who swears by the same product. Doesn't even need primer when used on freshly tanked parts. The same guy uses a red Rustoleum with a brush in the valley and inside the heads to seal the metal instead of Glyptal. Claims he has never had a failure in more than 20 years. Go figure.

The engine doesn't get all that hot (or at least, it shouldn't  ) so high temp paint is not really required. Go to an auto parts store and buy a spray can of "engine paint" in the colour that you want. Make sure that the surface is clean and completely free of oil, grease, dirt, etc. Tape off anything you don't want painted then start painting. It's as easy as that.

I used a 'rattle can' to paint my block, Ford blue, it was black (to boring). :D For the HEADS I used VHT (very high temperature) blue because I didn't want the paint getting wrierd around the exhaust ports. The shade of blue on the heads is slightly different than the block but is barely noticable.

Not to sound like a smart a$$, but the kind that stays on the engine. I painted mine twice. The first time I really didn't care if the paint stayted as it was more of a covering than anyhting else ( looked cool also ). But most flaked off while the parts were manhandled. Ended up on the the phone to a race shop for VHT.
It has held up okay. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...6636eng-1b.jpg The paint on the nuts for the studs didn't last, but it can be touched. |
I painted mine with POR-15 and a year later sent the block in to be bored and forgot to tell the guys to leave the color on there. When I went to pick the block up the guy asked me what the hell I painted it with ,because they could not get the stuff off when they were trying to clean it up.They managed to get alot of the color coat off with a wire brush and drill but didn't touch the base(POR-15) coat.
Best stuff I have tried. Dan |
