Torque on Edelbrock Heads
Anybody know where to find the torque requirements for Edelbrock Performer RPM heads?

As I am builidng a FE with a set of Edelbrock heads, I would like to know.
I planned on calling them when I got to that point. I'm sure the tech line would be helpful. MC |
I have them on my small block and used the Fords specs for that engine. I thought that was the proper way to go based upon calls I made at the time. I don't think you do anything special for Edelbrock.

Edelbrock gave me a very good set of instructions with my aluminum heads (for a chevy in another vehicle) Check their website, I believe I downloaded them a couple years later when I had the heads off and couldn't find the original directions.
They will give you torque and tightening sequence too. smith |
despite what the instructions say be sure and retorque once the engine has been run at temp for awhile...lesson learned the hard way. FWIW.

For a REAL small block (289/302) I have seen it in print (and I subscribe to) torquing the inner (long) head studs/bolts an addition 10# to prevent the intake manifold installation from lifting the head and reducing the clamping pressure on the head gasket. The final 10# being done after the "normal" correct torque is reached on all the fasteners.
Also ARP offers a set of reduced shank diameter studs for the 289/302 that maintain the clamping load on the outer (short) fasteners and keep the stretch in the fastener that is required to maintain clamping load. Read the tech info on ARP's website. Important stuff. |

Interesting no one provided numbers for torquing the heads. I torqued my 427 Edelbrock Aluminium heads at 100 ft lbs and as Rick Parker said I then torqued the inside long bolts and additional 10# (my head bolts are ARP). Do not forget to retorque the head bolts after a good break in of 30 mins or so. Even if you have the gaskets that claim you don't have to re-torque.

for the 298/302 70ft/lbs and the long bolts 80ft/lbs retorque after 2hours run
for the 351W 100ft/lbs and the long bolts 110ft/lbs retorque after 2hours run make sure the engine is cold when retorquing, use a moly base oil on the bolt threads when installing heads, this info came from the Edelbrock web site, to find the complete tech sheet go to their site, click on automotive, then click on cylinder heads, look up your heads, get the product number, then on the left hand side of the page go to tech center and click on the series number for your heads (6000 / 60000) then go down the list to find the product number for you heads, click on the number |
