Intake- to polish or not to polish?
Just looking for some opinions on polishing an intake manifold. I have heard some people say that the rough cast texture acts as thousands of "heat sinks", and that polishing will cause a hotter intake charge of fuel...but I see alot of polished manifolds.

Hmmmm....62 views and no responses. I know it would be "ok", as again, I have seen alot of polished intakes. I am just looking for a legit reason not to do it. In fact, I might even be begging for a reason or two not to do it, before I take the die grinder to it and start a long boring agonizing process. LOL
Seriously though, can anyone attest to the "heat sink" thing, or give an honest reason why NOT to polish? Thanks, Greg |
maintenance is the only reason that comes to mind to NOT polish. You have to keep after it to have it look like day one. The heat sink idea would work in theory. I don't have any way to test it though.

An alternative is to put clear 2 part Automotive paint on the new Virgin manifold or the freshly glass beaded aluminum. It holds up exceedingly well and cleans easily.

OK, I've run polished intakes on two different FE motors and never had a heating issue with either one. So, not sure about the heat sink theory and polishing. Hope that helps a little.

I like Jet-Hot or ceramic coating on my intakes for a couple of reasons. 1st they do not dis-color right at the exhaust crossover and look crappy like all paint does with time. Second is they clean up so easy and look new for a long time. I would guess that it also helps with your heat concerns as it is an advertised benefit.

I've not had any fuel heating issues either. If your worried about maintenance use Zoopseal. 3 years and I haven't done anything but wipe it of with a wet cloth.

Thanks for the replies. I am not too worried about the maintenance part, and with your advice. I think I might go ahead and polish it. I once had trouble with my 390 in my truck- it would run fine for about 10-15 minutes then shut off. Although I never did find the problem, one thing I thought it might have been was vapor lock, which is why I was somewhat concerned about polishing it. Thanks again.
