Easiest way to check multiple bolt sizes?
I'm restoring my Cobra, and am overhauling virtually everything. One of the things I'll be doing is replacing a lot of the bolts and nuts. Is there anything available that you all know of that will enable me to quickly and easily determine what diameter and thread a certain bolt is? I remember seeing a plate once somewhere that had numerous tapped holes in it. You would thread your bolt into the hole it fit and you then knew what size and thread it was. Do they still make these or something similar? What's it called and where do I get one? Thanks.

Most likely many hardware stores will have the little plastic sheet with holes, and threads. Once you start figuring out what is what. You can place them in plastic drinking cups with sizes marked for future reference. By the time you are done with the car you will know a 8mm 1.5 from a 5/16 course just by glancing at it. If you are restoring the car? You might want to get a tap & die set. Both metric, and standard, and these are perfect guides to sizes. Sooner, or later you will need the tap & die set with all of the work ahead of you.

If there is a nearby OSH hardware store in your area, go to the tool section and look for the following:
432 UNIVERSAL THREAD GAUGE - THEXTON Identifies - USS thread sizes, metric thread sizes, pipe thread sizes, bolt sizes, spark plug diameters, etc. Several different size gauges are included in the packet - all made from soft aluminum so as to not damage threads on certain parts. I used this handy tool quite a bit for determining size, thread pattern, etc. Sorry, can't remember the price, but was not that expensive as I recall. Hope this helps! George |
