Adjusting pins for Trigo wheels

After some maint that required removal of the rear brake discs I am putting everything back together. What I am running into is the pins are not aligning with the holes in the wheels. I have the Trigo pin alignment tool and it slips right on when the pins are loose and as I work around the pins slowly tightening it fits fine until I put the final torque on them and then it does not. I searched some old threads on the subject and saw where some folks were just beating the wheel studs/pins into final alignment. Is this really the prefered method?

I don't have the Trigo tool, so what I did was a (very tedious) trial and error installation to determine which way the pin needed to go, and used a two-foot piece of pipe that just fit over the pin (3/4"?) and "coaxed" it in the direction it needed to go...that is a whole lot less stressful to the pin and stud, and worked like a charm, just not very quick...
