Pin drive "pins"
Pin drive pins has anyone made their own larger pins to suit a one piece hub, and to suit the five pin common adapter type wheels?
To make it clearer I have a set of Compomotive pin drive wheels, but due to the extremely wide track of my Cobra I need to make one piece hubs up, and I have two options, Make hub up and drill to fit OEM wheel stud and Trigo/Compomotive screw on tapered base pin. Make a larger (3/4" OD) version of the 6 pin style pin which is 1/2" OD and has a 3/8" shank/thread, there may be a problem tightening as I wont have an internal drive in the pin to either screw it in to the hub, or hold it while I screw a retaining nut up! |
AJ, I not familiar with your wheel configuration, I can only refer to my Vintage pin-drive wheels. I had special lug nuts (round cylinder on the out side with an allen wrench shaped hole on the inside). The wheel adapters slip over the stock lug bolts and then the special nuts were installed, holes in the wheels fit over the cylinder shaped (pins) keeping the wheel snug and then the large wing nut holds the wheel on. I sure you already know this, just explaining how the Vintage works.
Question, Could you just install longer lug bolts with some sort of spacer behind your adapters to get the wider wheel placement? I don't know about your wheels but I thought this would be a method for my Vintage wheels if I need to do some additional spacing. Best of luck, Havasubill |

Thanks, I am mainly debating whether to make larger OD pins same design as the original cobra pins, I would just buy some but they are only 1/2" OD, where my wheels require 3/4" OD pins, doing the job the same way as Vintage wheels/Trigo is still a good option! I have to go narrower with the hubs or reduce my track as the Rim is outside the body by about 3/8" |

(6) 3/4" diameter nuts on 1/2" diameter threaded OEM studs on 4.25 bolt circle. Far superior in strength to 1/2" diameter pin with 3/8' shank and lock nut. |
How about using lug nuts made for 'tuner' wheels? Straight shanked nuts with an allen on one end. Might be different OD sizes too.

I am using Trigo pin drives on the rear, with HT 1/2" bolts, as my new 1999 - 2004 Cobra mustang hubs are only 4.5" pcd and these Compomotive wheels are 4.75"........bugger I thought I had the right PCD, and as these hubs are the same OD as the normal T/bird I only have about 2.8mm material which should be okay as the stress is rotational and I am making my own hubs so I can spigot them! Rick, On the front we are now going to make (6) 3/4 x 7/16" the 7/16" shank which will go through about 6mm on the inside to mount a rotor hat, I have looked at some factory BMW race cars etc and they employ a simple system like that but have the pins quite pointed for quick change of wheels! |
At one point a few years ago several folks were having difficulties with the hex wall spliting as the nut were being tightened. I don't recall what was ultimately found to be the cause, but I encourage the use of anti sieze on the threads and tapered surfaces of the nuts and adapter and on the threads and interfering tapers of the wheel and knock off,it will elimate fretting of the like metals.
I had considered making my own nuts from round stock and machining a hex on the end of each one so that a nomal 9/16" socket could be used instead of an internal hex wrench. Just a different way to skin a cat?????????? Or in you case could you make up some "sleeves" that coulds be a press fit on your existing pins? Thereby increasing the OD? I am also unclear if the bolt circle for your wheels is the same as your hubs are currently? |

I have used drive nuts with two external machined flats, just dont look as nice but who cares, you idea is good. The Trigo style pin drives will do, they are 3/4" OD so no need to alter them, I think you may have thought I have the 1/2" pin drives as per an original cobra but these are internal hex pins that normally bolt on to a wheel stud to hold an adapter onto a OEM hub! My PCD is wrong the Compomotives are 4.75" and the new Mustang hubs are 4.5" so we dont have a lot of material left after the larger 4.75" PCD is drilled, thats why I am going 1/2" bolts instead of wheel studs which have a larger diameter under the head! The front hubs are built like an original one piece hub and I am making locating pins for that along original lines, but as mentioned earlier in a post have the 3/4" diameter for the wheels and go down to a 7/16" (original 3/8") diameter shank etc to hold a brake hat on the inside! Hope that makes more sense! |
