Cracked oil pan

From the time my engine was delivered from Southern Automotive it has leaked. They fixed one major leak but a small nagging leak remained. Well, I found at least one source of the oil on my garage floor. On the bottom of the oil pan, right in the center of one of thouse little raised areas, there is a tiny crack. What is the best way to repair this? Should I just get out the mig welder and put a bead on it? Is removal recommended?

TIA

Jim,

Dunno how much work it is to pull the pan on a Backdraft, but on my E-M it is easily done on the lift.

The hazard I would think is whether the weld penetrates as it should, and possibly leaves bits of slag and burned oil inside the pan somewhere near the pickup

Mark me firmly in the column of "take the pan off first!"

Definitely take the pan off before welding! Say, is that a Moroso pan?

Clean off area with some brake clean and apply some silicone. If that does not work, remove pan, clean and weld.

Not sure on the brand of pan.

Removing it won't be that difficult. I can fix the stripped bolts while I have it off as well.

Try the new JB Weld putty. Supposed to work for that sort of thing.

I dabbed a little bit of the ultra copper silicone. No more leaks. This is the first time since I've had the Cobra that it hasn't leaked!!!!:)

jb weld worked on mine

Put me in the remove pan category. While some of the other fixes might work, and have for those suggesting them, I consider them temporary at best.

I agree. The silicone is a temporary fix. I've been wanting to put in a roller cam. This may be the excuse I need to go ahead with it.:3DSMILE:
