storage questions

when storing for a year should i drain the gas tank or keep it full with stabil in it ? drain the oil too? radiator I will drain. put it on blocks or suported on the wheels(crap wheels)? moving to oahu for a year just to see what i can see. thanks for any help.

I store mine for about 4 mths out of the year. I keep gas in the tank with fuel stabilizer. Before I store it, I put the stab in and run it for a few minutes to get the stabilized fuel into the carb. Then I fog the engine with Dexron II. I then drop the oil and filter and replace with new oil and filter. When you are running it that last time, just before you drop the oil, I run some Dexron in the crank case to flush out any sludge and it thins the oil a little so you get a better cleaning. I don't normally put it up on blocks, but if you are going to be gone a year+ you might want to put it up on stands. Might want to put a little Methyl Hydrate in the fuel to keep the moisture problem down to a minimum.:)

Question: Do you really want to clean the internals (with Dexron II) and reduce the amount of suspended oil that would ultimately rest on the bearing journals, piston rings, etc? I would think you'd want the opposite for LT storage.

I would also add possibly pulling the plugs and spraying some WD40 (or some type of penetrating oil) in there before hand tightening them back in. Anything to coat the upper cylinder walls and reduce the chances of rust.

You are right. I think after changing the oil and filter, run the motor for a few minutes to coat everything with the new oil. Good point!:o

Let me help!

PM, I have plenty of room in my garage for another Cobra. It would be best if you just let me look after your Cobra for you, I'll start it once a month or so, & we don't get "freezing" temps like Truckee, she'll stay nice and cozy in my garage. Plus, she'll have company:

Fill gas tank and add Stabil and run car to get Stabil all the way up to carb.

Give your neighbor a key and tell him to start the car and let it run for 15-20 minutes once a month. After its all warm, tell him (or her) that they can drive the car up and down the driveway BUT no further. This will prevent flat spots on the tires. No form of special storage is better than running and using the car periodically.

Thanks for the offer jdog.Seems there is no shortage of babysitters . Mine i think would get a complex sitting next to yours. All though yours does look lonely. hmmmm, what if they had off-spring ?

pmfranke 06-18-2007 12:07 PM

what and where do you get methl Hydrate. it is very dry here not much chance of rust.

427SnakeSC 06-18-2007 12:16 PM

Not the rust you are concerned with. When gas sits in the tank for a while, condensation comes from the air. Water droplets form and drip into the tank. When that water tries to go through the carb, it isn't going to happen! Methyl Hydrate is an alcohol that will mix with the water and gas and burn the water off. I raises your octane a bit too. Should be able to get it in most automotive stores.

ok ,I think it's called heat

427SnakeSC 06-18-2007 01:25 PM

Not sure what they call it down there in Cali. Up here it is also call gas line anti-freeze. I think you will be able to find it in a Home Depot, Hardware store or Automotive supply store. I use it in all my toys for the winter, have been all my life

Hey jdog, love that pic! Car is still enroute. Got news yesterday, motor will be completed early next week. I am going to try and get down to watch and video it being dyno'd. Should be interesting! Getting very exciting, now!:D :3DSMILE: **)

WTM442 gave the advise I would have. Have someone start and move the car once a month. If you fill the gas tank full to the filler neck the surface area of fuel in contact with air is small, so very little moisture will get into the fuel. Only way to keep trans and rear axle lubricated is to move the car.

wtm442 06-19-2007 11:09 AM

Thanks Murphy. I learned that from a guy at a hardware store where I bought my Ariens snow blower. Every month in the winter I start the Cobra and the snow blower in the summer and let it warm up. Of course, with the snow blower, it has a gas shutoff valve so I can run the carb dry. The snow blower start on the first pull every time.

Oh, I almost forget ... the snowblower is about 20 years old.

Murphy 06-19-2007 02:07 PM

Move

Another solution is move somewhere where it doesn't snow and drive the thing. :JEKYLHYDE
