brake conversion kit??
I just got my grandfathers 66' cobra replica. Have drum brakes in rear and disc in front ( no power) and the car eont stop for anything. I would like to convert them to full power discs. What do I need to know about the car in order to know what I am looking for and does anyone have any tips??
What I know know is: Believe the car is an Everett Morris kit. 428ci with an automatic trans (unfortunatly). My dad bought the car for him when it was 90% complete so I dont know the car inside and out. But I am I can get any info needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you |
I have an EM replica with Corvette suspension and manual disc brakes all around. I also drove a somewhat heavier 1963 Corvette coupe with manual drum brakes for many years. Both cars stop very well. My point is that you may not need a new brake system or power brakes to get it to stop well. Since you don't seem to know much about your car, I suggest you start by locating someone near you who can identify and troubleshoot your brake system. That likely will not be a standard mechanic. You need someone who has built some hot rods and/or race cars.

I designed my brake system based on 13" corvette rotors and 4-piston brembo calipers (dodge viper discards). I run an old-school twin master cylinder balance bar deal, completely manual. I did the math on hydraulic ratio and pedal ratio...and the thing stops better than I ever dreamed it would. Firm/hard pedal, incredible stopping power, great predictable performance. I wouldn't change it one bit.

How large are the wheels and what style and brand on that 13" rotor setup?

Wheels
They are 17" CCW wheels; custom width and backspacing, and 5x4.75 bolt pattern to maintain compatibility with the cheap and available vette rotors.
Tire availability and size selection on 18" is better these days. I'm thinking about getting a set of 18's when it comes time to buy tires again and keeping the 17's just for road race slicks. |
