Good article Rick, thanks for the link.

Good article Rick.

One word of caution... with all the recent talk about zinc, please note that the article was written in 1994 so the chart that shows zinc content may no longer be correct.

Rick Parker 09-25-2007 11:54 AM

This is true, I had not realized the articles date.

rdorman 09-25-2007 12:00 PM

Still good stuff. I just didn't want any one to think that the chart was up to date, buy some oil that they thought had a high level of zinc only to find out after wiping a cam that it had been reformulated. And there is a lot of that going on!

Additional Current info as of today

I called and spoke to the tech department at Kendall today (9/25). The fellow was very cordial and free with information once he realized I wasn't an EPA spy (!) .
Regading the lack of Zinc which has been on a slow decline for about 8 years with the biggest hit in the last year according to him he suggested this:
http://tds.econocophillips.com/catal...0TDS%20Web.pdf

It has a very high zinc content (1450 PPM of ZDDP) and is compatible with gasoline engines, ideal for high spring pressures in flat tappet cam engines.

This was their response to an Email inquiry prior to my conversation:

Quote:

Current ZDDP levels in the 10W-40 viscosity grade are 770 ppm. For engines equipped with flat tappet cams you will want a product with a higher concentration of ZDDP. I recommend going with the Kendall Super-D 3 in either 10W-30 or 15W-40. The ZDDP levels of these products are 1450 ppm which is sufficient protection for flat tappet cam equipped engines.

good info Rick.
I just order a case of 10w-30 Valvoline racing oil earlier today.

FWIW, thinner oil (i.e. 30 weight) will drop your oil pressures quite a bit if you are used to running a heavier oil (i.e. straight 50 weight or 20w-50 multi-grade). Your cold pressures will be the same, but the warm side will make you go "Hmmmmm....". Also remember that with multi-grades, the oil is designed to act like two oils in one. For 20w-50, it will act like a 20w when cold (thinner viscosity) but settle to a 50w (i.e. more heat protection) when hot.

You can get dizzy and get a WIDE variety of opinions when talking oil. It's almost as bad as going with the wife to buy carpet.

Just got an email from Keith Craft in Arkadelphia. For us So Cal folks, he recommends 10-40w Valvoline Racing or regular oil. No need for the 20-50 in our FE's with roller lifters. Pressure drops to around 25 psi at idle when hot, but bumps right back up to 50 when under way.

I always run light oils. I am from that side of the fence. 10w40 or 15w40. When I went to order the 10w40 Racing oil they didn't have it in a straight racing oil. Just a blend so with Winter coming on I went for the 10w30. 10 psi per 1000rpm is fine. The pressure in my engine is 75psi cold Idle and 40psi hot. Pressure does not indicate flow.

Tony,

I can't find any locally. Where did you order it from?

The last sentence in your post if very important.

You can have oil pressure coming out your butt, and still starve the bearings of oil, or have them suffer pressure wash. Either way, your engine will be toast.
